chapter 50
Elara was slightly stunned.
Suppressing all the doubts in her heart, she looked at Gavin, her voice clear and distant: “I’ll be leaving then. About earlier… thank you, Mr. Windsor.”
“Miss Elara…”
Neil started to say something, but heard Gavin’s cold, mocking voice: “Enough, don’t embarrass yourself.”
Elara unconsciously traced her fingertips over her palm, but her departure didn’t pause.
Watching the black Maybach disappear into the night, Gavin stubbed out his cigarette and bent down to get in the car, his figure exuding loneliness in the harsh winter wind.
Neil got into the passenger seat: “Miss Elara’s tolerance for that Zane is too high.”
“Every time we encounter Miss Elara, she’s clearly still angry with you.”
“But why isn’t she angry with Zane? He’s given her such a big green hat, and he’s always not accompanying her back to the old estate, causing her to be punished…”
For some reason, the air pressure in the car inexplicably dropped.
Neil felt a chill down his back.
The bodyguard in the driver’s seat didn’t notice and continued talking: “That’s naturally because she likes him. Women are always so tolerant in front of the men they love, their bottom lines can keep retreating.
Neil didn’t think Elara had that kind of personality: “I don’t believe it.“.
“Whether you believe it or not isn’t up to you.“.
The bodyguard looked at Gavin through the rearview mirror: “Sir, what do you think…”
“When did you become so talkative?”
The man’s deep, rugged face was cold as frost under the streetlight shadows, his voice also cold as ice.
The two in front immediately fell silent.
They hadn’t said anything wrong.
Why was he angry again?
Elara’s POV
The drive back from the Windsor estate to the villa was smooth, almost unnervingly so. With the roads slick from the ongoing storm, our driver was taking it slow and careful.
Warm air filled the car, thick and silent. After a while, I finally felt the biting cold seep out of my limbs, the feeling returning in a slow, prickling thaw.
I glanced up at Zane, about to say something, when he beat me to it.
“Are you angry?” he asked.
“No.”

chapter 50
I answered truthfully. I couldn’t really claim to be angry–this wasn’t the first time he’d stood me up. At most, it was just that familiar hollow feeling of disappointment.
But I honestly hadn’t expected him to show up at all after that text. Surprise was my main feeling–way stronger than any disappointment.
Zane’s gaze was steady on my downcast eyes. “Then what’s wrong? You haven’t said a word since you got in the car.”
You haven’t talked to me either, I thought.
“I didn’t expect you to come,” I said honestly. “I was just a little surprised.”
“I thought about it–the Windsors probably gave you a hard time.” His voice was as gentle and steady as always, a practiced warmth in his tone. “I was worried, so I decided to come pick you up first.”
For a second, I felt dazed, even confused. If I hadn’t found those photos in his study, I might have almost believed he actually cared.
Seeing my silence, Zane asked with a light smile, “What’s the matter? In your eyes, am I really that unconcerned about you?”
He said it like a joke.
But I really did think so.
Still, I wasn’t about to admit it. I let the corners of my mouth lift just a little, my dimples barely showing, looking utterly obedient. “No, I just don’t want to delay your important business.”
“It’s fine. The meeting was rescheduled for 8:30.” He glanced at his watch. “There’s no time to take you home first. Will you wait for me in my office?”
“I can just go home…”
“It won’t take long, alright?”
didn’t refuse again. “Alright.”
ollowed Zane step by step into the Greyson Group building. Even at this hour, the place was lit up like daytime. Employees from some project team were already waiting in the conference room.
After Zane went in, I headed to the CEO’s office at the end of the hall. Maybe it was the lack of sleep last night, but I curled up on the sofa, hugged a cushion, and gradually drifted off.
I didn’t know how much time had passed when the buzzing of my phone woke me. The office lights felt harsh. I shielded my eyes with one hand, fumbling for the phone with the other, my voice groggy. “Hello?”
