chapter 60
“Professor, I’ve thought it through,” I reassured him, smiling slightly. “Windsor Corp is huge. It’s not like I’ll bump into him every time I’m there.”
“True. And the project really is outstanding. I’m glad you’re seeing it that way.”
He sounded relieved, already thinking ahead for me. “Once this drug is developed, your reputation will soar. By then, even if Margaret Windsor tries to interfere, it’ll be too late.”
As a core member of the cancer research team, I’d finally have a shield even she’d hesitate to challenge.
I hadn’t thought that far ahead, though. “That’s only if we succeed.”
“With your talent,” Colton said, his voice full of conviction, “I have no doubt you will.”
He knew my capabilities better than anyone.
Third–person POV
The 230–mile drive from Washington to New York meant no overnight stay–Zane had a shareholders‘ meeting in the morning. He and Amelia drove back that night through New York’s endless traffic.
His red limited edition 911 turned heads wherever it went. When they stopped at a light, phones came out to take pictures–a nice little ego boost for Amelia. “I’m really happy today, Zane. Thank you…”
She turned and found him lost in thought. “You’re spacing out again!” she said, reproachful but uneasy. He’d been like this all afternoon–restless, constantly checking his phone.
“Just tired,” he said, rubbing his brow.
“Tired? Or thinking about… her?”
She didn’t say the name. He never admitted it anyway.
When they got home, Zane didn’t wait for her. He strode inside and upstairs, urgency in his steps. He knocked lightly on the master bedroom door, then pushed it open.
The room was dark. “Elara, today…” he began, but stopped.
The bed was empty. Perfectly made.
His heart sank. She hadn’t come home.
He turned on the lights. Her skincare was neatly arranged. The walk–in closet looked full. But something felt off. His eyes landed on the bookshelf–only a few books remained. Hadn’t it been full before?
Amelia followed him in. “What’s wrong? Elara’s still not back?”
“She must be angry,” he murmured.
Amelia let out a slight sigh of relief, a smug satisfaction settling in.
That bitch Elara had moved out ages ago, and she’d made sure to fill every inch of her closet with her and Max’s things the moment she was gone. She’d been dying to do it–to take everything that was Elara’s and make it her own.
And what a happy accident it turned out to be. Her little power move had totally fooled Zane into thinking all of Elara’s things were still right where they belonged.

Then Zane suddenly headed downstairs. “I need to check something.”
He woke Mary, “When was Madam last here?”
“Madam comes back daily,” Mary said smoothly. “She’s at the Windsor estate helping with the birthday banquet.”
Amelia was surprised–why was Mary covering for her?
“And her books?” Zane pressed.
“There were always only a few, sir.”
Zane finally let it go. Mary was loyal. And Elara wouldn’t just leave–unlike his friends‘ dramatic girlfriends, she never made scenes.
She’d probably just been upset about the car dealership. He’d make it up to her.
Elara’s POV
The next day at the clinic, I’d just stepped out of my car when a flashy red limited edition 911 sped past and slid–more than a little arrogantly–into a parking spot.
A few colleagues nearby stopped to gawk.
