chapter 61
Amelia choked.
I reined myself in immediately and strode into the clinic.
My schedule today was packed solid with back–to–back appointments, right through till evening. No breaks.
Walking into my consultation room, I went through the motions on autopilot: shrugging off my wool coat, hanging it up, swapping it for the white lab coat. Then I started calling in the first patients.
My patients usually love me–I’m never late, and I often start early.
During what was supposed to be my lunch break, I hadn’t managed to grab a single bite. I was just contemplating what I could possibly order for a five–minute meal when a knock came at my office door.
I looked up instinctively. It was Elias, holding a thermal lunch bag. He closed the door behind him, his face etched with concern.
“You okay? I heard someone say Amelia gave you trouble this morning?”
I couldn’t help a small smile. “Is that really the version of the story you got?”
“Alright, alright.” Seeing I was in decent spirits, he relaxed into a smile. “They just said it was rare to see Dr. Elara with her ‘game face‘ on this morning. Got people wondering if you and Amelia have some… history.”
I didn’t take the bait, my eyes dropping to the container in his hands. “Is that for me?”
“Yeah.” Elias set it down in front of me. “Grilled chicken wings, BBQ ribs, and roasted corn. Sylvia specifically told me to bring this to you.”
The second I popped the lid, the most incredible aroma filled the small room. I couldn’t resist picking up a rib right away. “You went to the Professor’s
house?”
“Needed to discuss the Windsor Corp project with him.”
Elias sat down across from me. “How is it?”
“Of course it’s amazing.” I smiled around a mouthful. “Have you eaten?”
“I, uh…” He paused, his gaze softening as he looked at me. “Not yet.”
“Then let’s eat together.” I pulled a spare disposable fork from my drawer and handed it over. “So, the Windsor Corp project? When’s the kick–off?”
“Let’s eat first.” Elias glanced at the clock. “We can go over the project details tonight, after you get off. No rush.”
“Oh, and by the way… Amelia, She’s been taken on as Joel’s apprentice.”
Hearing that, my hand stilled for just a second mid–bite. I wasn’t exactly surprised, though.
Zane always goes the extra mile for anything related to Amelia.
Here at the clinic, Joel is second only to the Professor in seniority.
I just nodded. “It’s good she’ll have Joel looking over her shoulder. At least that should prevent any major screw–ups.”
Just before my shift was finally over, right after I’d finished giving a patient their injection, my phone buzzed once in my pocket.

chapter 61
A text from Zane: [Elara, I’ll come pick you up from work]
I frowned slightly, my thumb already hovering to type out a refusal.
Before I could even figure out a polite excuse, a nurse’s voice cut through the clinic, sharp with alarm. “A patient has collapsed!”
My whole body snapped to attention. I shoved my phone back into my pocket and sprinted over.
Checking the patient’s pulse and scanning his pallor, I started barking orders immediately.
“Tourniquet and a syringe, now!”
The nurses sprang into action, handing over the emergency gear.
My hands moved quickly, steady as I got an IV line in and started CPR, calling for oxygen therapy.
Soon, a bystander yelled out, excited, “He’s coming around!”
“Get a stretcher over here! Don’t let the patient move on his own!” I kept working, instructing the nurses to support the now–conscious man. “You just had a stroke. Don’t try to move.”
The other patients watching immediately started murmuring with admiration. “Dr. Elara’s emergency skills are something else…”
“You’re telling me! She cured my chronic condition–I’d had it for over ten years!” one of my long–term patients announced, sounding downright proud.
Before leaving the treatment room, I gave careful, final instructions.
“Take the medicine twice a day, and remember to come in for your daily injections. No slacking. This isn’t something to take lightly; one wrong move and it could lead to serious complications.”
