chapter 62
chapter 62
I didn’t stick around to hear Zane’s response. I just walked away.
Who cared?
If he wanted his brother’s wife so badly, he could have her.
I was done.
Behind me, I could just make out the voices of a few female colleagues, thick with envy.
“Oh my god, how does Mia get so lucky? A boyfriend who’s not just loaded, but stupidly handsome, and actually thoughtful enough to pick her up from work?”
“I’d give ten years of my life for a guy like that.”
“Well, I’d give twelve!”
“Damn, really raising the stakes there!”
I almost laughed.
They’d understand soon enough what it was like to actually have a man like Zane.
He’s handsome. He’s rich. He can be sweet.
But he’ll never, ever stand firmly by any woman’s side.
Not even Amelia’s.
Did they think Zane was capable of being loyal to any one woman?
No.
He’s only loyal to his own desires.
It took me a while to figure that out. But I see it clearly now.
Just as I started the engine, the passenger door swung open.
Elias lifted a brow, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Heading out for dinner?”
His voice pulled me back to the present, reminding me we still had the Windsor Corporation project to discuss. I softened my expression and returned a light smile. “What are you in the mood for?”
He tapped his phone, and a moment later, mine buzzed with a new location. “There’s a place that just opened nearby–supposed to be good.”
Third person POV
The black Maybach remained parked in place.
The clinic’s parking lot required a loop to exit, and Zane happened to see the moment Elias got in the car.
Through the windshield, he saw Elara’s gentle smile.
He’d never realized how vibrant and beautiful her smile could be–almost impossible to look away from. And yet, she had never once smiled like that

for him.
Amelia noticed the displeasure flickering in Zane’s eyes and seized the opportunity, smiling as she spoke: “That’s Elias. His family owns a famous pharmaceutical conglomerate, and this clinic is under his name.”
“Elara and he are very close. They often hang out after work hours…”
An unnamed emotion rampaged through Zane’s chest, making him inexplicably irritated. “He’s her senior. It’s normal for them to be friendly.”
“Well, who knows–I heard he spent a long time in Elara’s office during lunch.”
Amelia muttered quietly, “Elara is young to begin with and a bit flighty. It’s normal for her to be fickle…”
“Enough!”
Zane’s tone suddenly turned cold. “I know her personality better than you do!”
Amelia froze.
She never expected the man she’d fought so hard to win would now scold her because of Elara.
She went quiet, pretending to be docile as she lowered her head–her curly brown hair falling just enough to hide the twisted expression on her face.
Beneath it, she was scowling, her shimmering blue eye shadow doing little to soften the resentment and bitter jealousy in her eyes.
When Zane wasn’t looking, she pulled out her phone and typed a quick message to an unknown number:
Something important came up. You need to come back and help me.
Elara’s POV
You know, Elias has this killer instinct for finding amazing food. Whenever he picks a place, you can bet it’s going to be top–tier.
The spot he’d chosen today was serene, all soft lighting and quiet murmurs–exactly what I needed after the day I’d had. He knows my tastes inside and out and had already called in our order on the way. One less thing to think about.
Since it was a last–minute thing, all the private rooms were booked. The hostess led us to a cozy booth out in the main dining area.
Over the food–which was, as expected, incredible–I finally broached the subject. “Elias, roughly when do you think the Windsor Corp project will need us to come on–site?”
“Soon,” he said, using his spoon to slide a perfectly glazed barbecue rib onto my plate.
“They haven’t given us a hard date yet. You know how these big research projects are–the timeline is mostly at their whim. We just have to be ready when they call.”
He paused, then added, a little hesitantly, “We’ll probably need to be at Windsor Corp itself fairly often once it kicks off…” His eyes flicked to mine, checking my reaction.
Windsor Corp occupied two massive towers downtown, housing everything from corporate offices to the state–of–the–art labs we’d be using.
The chance of running into him was statistically low, but… not zero.
A wry, helpless smile touched my lips.
“Why are you sounding just like the Professor now?” I put my fork down and looked at him earnestly.
“Elias, don’t worry about me. I know how to separate my professional work from my… personal history.”
