Betrayed I Upgraded to His Billionaire Brother novel Chapter 64

Chapter 64

I immediately recognized it. The fourleaf clover pendant Eleanor had given me. I took it from his hand and stuffed it into my bag, the movement

sharp. Hearing the sarcasm lacing his words, I met them with a cold, flat tone. It’s none of your business.

After that, I didn’t bother waiting for whatever else he might say. Where should I drop you off?

The man didn’t seem offended. Madison Avenue.

Madison Avenue?I couldn’t hide my surprise.

Gavin looked up at me, those piercing sapphireblue eyes catching the dim light. I live on Madison Avenue. Is that a problem?

No problemI managed, my hands tightening on the wheel.

I just hadn’t expectedsuch a coincidence.

Silence settled heavily in the car for the rest of the drive.

Which building?I finally asked as we reached Madison Avenue.

No answer came from the passenger seat.

I turned to look, and my breath caught. He’d fallen asleep at some point. In the quiet gloom of the car, his sharp, aristocratic features were softened. His long, dark lashes cast shadows on his cheeks, and his profile was all strong lines and impossible elegance. He lookedyounger. Less like the intimidating fortress of a man he always was.

GavinI started, but then thought better of it. Waking him felt like a violation. Instead, I pulled out my phone and fished Neil out of my blacklist.

I texted him for the address.

The reply was almost instantaneous, as if he’d been waiting by the phone. [Miss! Cedar Cove Estate!]

Cedar Cove Estate.

It was very close to where I lived.

The place was legendary in New Yorka sprawling, insanely private compound on Madison. The whole lakeside road leading to it was privately owned, a fact that had fueled citywide speculation for years about who actually lived there.

I never would have guessed it was Gavin’s.

Neil must have called ahead, because the security barrier lifted the moment my car approached.

I drove slowly down the secluded lakeside road. In the dead of winter, thin ice crusted the edges of the water on both sides, the scene stark and forbidding.

But for some reason I couldn’t explain, a strange sense of calm settled over me.

Are we here?

His low, gravelly voice, stripped of its usual icy edge by sleep, suddenly cut through the quiet. The deep night, the hushed car… it was exactly like the past. Like all those nights he’d patiently pick me up from our teacher’s place and drive me home.

Except back then, I was the one curled up and asleep in the passenger seat.

Chapter 64

Gavin never woke me. He’d just carry me back to my bedrooni and let me sleep on.

The car wheels hit a patch of black ice, skidding slightly and jolting me back to the present. I pressed my lips together. Yeah. We’re here.

Gavin didn’t seem to notice my momentary lapse. I heard from the professor you want in on the project?

Yeah. The car came to a smooth stop in front of a grand entrance.

I turned to look at him, my gaze clean anddespite my best effortsa little hesitant. Is that okay?

He smirked, a flash of white in the dim light. If I said no, would you actually drop it?

I wasn’t sure what he was getting at, but I didn’t want to blow my chance by saying the wrong thing. It’s your project. I’ll respect your callif you’re against me joining, then I won’t.

Ever since I’d married Zane, the distance between us had only grown, becoming something worse than strangers. And after I’d told him outright that I wouldn’t divorce Zane, his attitude toward me had become even more unpredictable. The rift between us now felt like a canyon.

The air went still, and I could acutely sense his displeasure.
