With that, he pushed the car door open and strode away, his long legs carrying his tall, imposing frame with a grace that was utterly infuriating.

“Sure.”

I didn’t feel like making a scene, so I slid into the empty seat and kept to myself, picking at my food while their chatter rolled on around me.

“Mia, how did you land such a perfect, loaded boyfriend?” one of them finally blurted out, unable to hold back.

Amelia got all shy under the spotlight. “Oh, you know… we’ve known each other since we were kids. And honestly, I didn’t even chase him—”

“No way!”

A chorus of oohs and aahs followed. “So you’re childhood sweethearts, and he made the first move? That’s so dreamy!”

“Sounds like some rich family fairytale, Way out of our league, huh…”

“So when’s the wedding, Mia? We’re all dying to see you walk down the aisle!”

Amelia smiled–one of those polished, I–know–something you don’know smiles. “Soon. There are just… a few things to sort out first. But when it happens, you’re all definitely invited.”

“Yesss! Can’t wait!”

Then her eyes landed on me. “Dr. Elara,” she beamed, sweet as sugar, “you’ll come too, won’t you?”

I set my fork down, wiped my mouth slowly, and met her gaze without blinking. “It’s noon alright–perfect time for some daytime dreaming.”

And with that, I gathered my things and walked away.

Amelia hadn’t expected her to be so thick–skinned. She had made herself so clear, yet Elara still wouldn’t let go of her position as Mrs. Grayson!

Not only that, but she had mocked her in front of so many people.

Amelia took a deep breath to suppress her anger when she heard a girl console her: “Mia, don’t take it to heart. Elara just got divorced, so she probably doesn’t want to hear about such things.”

Amelia’s eyes widened. “Divorced?”

“Yes.”

This girl had only found out after overhearing Elara and Eleanor’s conversation last time. She lowered her voice: “But Elara probably doesn’t want too many people to know. I only heard by accident.”

“Don’t tell others, okay?”

“Don’t worry.”

Amelia patted her shoulder, unable to wait to stand up. “I’m full. You all take your time eating.”

She walked out of the cafeteria, her eyes shining with excitement, and immediately called Zane.
