“Don’t tell me you found his hidden lover or some mysterious ex girlfriend there. I remember the press going wild about that supermodel, the rockstar, and that casino heiress–all of them chasing after him at some point!”
“Oh my god, Ethan really is the total package! No wonder women lose their minds over him. But the little secret I found isn’t quite what you’re thinking–and it’s definitely not what anyone expected.”
The lamplight in the living room cast a soft glow as Chloe thrust her tablet toward me, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
I set down my mug of honey water, intrigued. She pulled up a team photo. “University ice hockey. Can you tell which one is Ethan and which one is Gavin at first glance? My brain short–circuited.”
I took the tablet, studying the young faces in uniforms. “Wait… is that Ethan on the left? No, maybe the right one? They look almost identical here.”
“Right? Hot people all look the same, it’s a scientific fact.” Chloe grinned, tapping the screen. “But look closer. Their energy’s completely different.”
I saw it then. “Ethan’s in the center. That quiet intensity… He was the captain, wasn’t he? The one who’d only really celebrate–like ruffle a teammate’s hair–after a solid win.”
“And Gavin,” Chloe pointed, “just radiates that restless, sharp energy. As for Zane…” She swiped to a cropped section of the image. “There, in the back. Totally eclipsed.”
She then pulled up another image–a photograph of a handwritten note, the script elegant and restrained. “Now for the main event. This was on his private feed.” Her voice softened as she read the words aloud: “I cannot tell why this heart languishes in silence. It is for small needs it never asks, or knows or remembers.”
She looked up at me, her expression meaningful. “That’s Rabindranath Tagore. That’s not a random quote. That’s a confession.”
A strange pang echoed in my chest. I scrolled further. “These travel photos… They’re freaking me out. The pigeons at Marienplatz… the black sand beach in Vik… the Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto. I’ve stood in those exact spots.”
“Goosebumps, right?” Chloe leaned closer, her voice dropping. “I know a guy who can get into hidden archives. We could recover the rest of his posts. There has to be more.”
“No.” The word came out sharper than I intended. I put the tablet down. “We can’t do that, Chloe. It’s a total violation.”
“It’s for the truth!” she insisted, frustration edging her tone. “Don’t you want to know what really happened to him?”
“More than anything,” I said, my voice low but firm. “But not like this. There has to be a line.”
Chloe hugged a cushion to her chest, her disagreement clear in the set of her jaw. “You’re playing this way too noble.”
A glance at the clock showed it was well past 2 AM. The fatigue was suddenly heavy on my shoulders. “Truce?” I suggested, rubbing my temples. “It’s too late for this.”
“Fine. Truce.” She sighed, finally uncurling herself from the sofa. “But this debate isn’t over.”
As I turned off the lights, the darkness felt different. It was no longer empty, but filled with the ghosts of those familiar landscapes, each one a silent question hanging in the air.
The next day, I headed to the clinic for my regular consultations.
With New Year’s around the corner, patient numbers had started to drop. Nobody really wants to see a doctor around Christmas unless it’s something
serious.
Still, my office was anything but quiet.

Chapter 76
As soon as I stepped into the waiting area, I overhear two nurses trying to reason with someone.
“Sweetie, this is a doctor’s office, not a playground.”
“Come on, let’s go–hey! That’s not for playing with!”
“I want it!”
A boy’s stubborn voice shot back, full of pride: “I’m gonna break it! That’s what she gets for bullying my mom!”
One of the nurses spotted me and rushed over, flustered.
