I barely reacted. My eyes stayed locked on the stethoscope in his hand.

“Give that back,” I said, my voice cold.

That wasn’t just any stethoscope. My teacher’s family had passed down a unique auscultation method–one successor per generation. Master Colton chose me when I was thirteen. Even Elias had never been taught.

This custom stethoscope was a gift from my teacher when I began my training.

To me, it meant more than just a tool.

“No! I wanna make you mad!”

Seeing he’d gotten to me, Max grinned wider. He threw the stethoscope on the floor and jumped, stomping on it wildly.

I snapped.

Grabbing him by the collar, I dragged him out of the office, pinched his chubby cheek, and stared straight into his eyes.

“If you ever step into my office again, I’ll use that stethoscope to knock some sense into your head.”

My voice was low, steady. “Believe me?”

He trembled, pouted, then burst into loud sobs. “No! You’re lying! Let me go–I want my mom!”

I released him, and he scrambled off, crying loudly.

Such a scared little thing, and yet someone kept sending him to test me.

Did Amelia even care about him like a real mother should?

Not that it was my problem.

He wasn’t my kid–I wasn’t going to lose sleep over him.

The morning passed quietly. Fewer patients, but I didn’t leave my chair once.

By the time I wrapped up with the last patient, it was already 1 PM.

Just as I stepped out of the restroom and turned toward my office, a sharp cry cut through the hallway–coming from the fire escape stairwell.

Instinct took over. I pushed the door open and rushed in.
