Pushing the Edge 85
Zane finally finished his polite small talk with several female heirs and began to realize what his mother was doing.
Just as he walked out of the reception room, he saw Victoria approaching: “What do you think of those girls today?”
“What do I think about what?”
He was playing dumb on purpose.
Victoria pretended to look stern: “Don’t play dumb, Zane. You’re my son–don’t I know how smart you are?”
Zane had originally wanted to brush it off, unwilling to have an unpleasant confrontation with his mother.
However, since the conversation had reached this point, he didn’t mind being frank: “Mom, you really shouldn’t interfere in my personal life.”
His tone carried some coldness.
But Victoria had always doted on this younger son and wasn’t angry. She just asked earnestly: “If I don’t interfere, what do you plan to do?”
Zane frowned.
He had never thought about doing anything. As he had told Elara, his wife would only ever be Elara.
Although she had been very rebellious lately, that was his responsibility.
It was normal for a young woman to be jealous and show it.
He didn’t speak, but Victoria read too much into it. She frowned and spoke sternly: “Don’t tell me you’re considering letting Amelia marry into.the Grayson family for a second time? My two sons marrying the same woman–the Grayson family would become the laughingstock of New York’s entire upper society!”
Thinking about this, she couldn’t even sleep at night!
Zane’s expression was cold: “What are you talking about? I have a wife–how could I marry someone else?”
Victoria was surprised but didn’t believe it in her heart: “You’ve never thought about divorcing and marrying Amelia?”
“Of course not.”
Zane nodded, speaking patiently: “Mom, I know better than anyone what I should do.”
“Don’t arrange things like today anymore, and don’t privately say anything to Elara.”
“But…”
Victoria thought of something and felt somewhat uncomfortable, but still nodded: “I understand.”
Zane keenly sensed something was wrong: “Is there something else you’re hiding from me?”
“No.”
Victoria denied it flatly.
She had already decided that Zane’s wife absolutely had to be replaced.

Chapter 85
Ever since Elara made those outrageous demands at the negotiation table, Victoria had become dissatisfied with Elara’s behavior.
A woman who only cared about profit couldn’t become Zane’s support–she would only drag him down.
Elara’s POV
I waited until Theodore was completely out of sight before I let myself slump against the cold wall, releasing a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. The sharp winter air bit through my thin dress, but it was the chill inside that made me shiver.
As the tension in my mind finally eased, a dull throb started in my palms. I looked down–crescent–shaped marks dug deep into my skin, a few of them bleeding. Every time I saw Theodore, those unbearable memories surged back like waking nightmares… I couldn’t control the fear he stirred in me.
It took a long while before I finally stopped trembling. By then, my whole body was stiff with cold. I straightened my dress–miraculously still presentable–and walked back into the glittering hall. I hadn’t forgotten why I was here tonight.
Victoria seemed to have expected me. As soon as I reappeared, a servant quietly guided me to the second–floor study. She was already there, pouring coffee into a delicate porcelain cup. She glanced at me, her eyes lingering on my legs. “Where did you run off to? You’re practically blue.”
The hall was stuffy,” I said flatly. “I went to the garden for air.”
She slid a coffee cup toward me. “Try this–beans shipped directly from Colombia.”
It did smell rich. Gavin had always loved coffee, and growing up with him meant I’d tasted every variety by the time I was sixteen. I took a small sip. “Mrs. Grayson, where is the divorce certificate?”
