Chapter 86
“Impossible.” I held her gaze. “I only agreed to keep it quiet temporarily until you found a suitable match.”
Whether Zane was willing or not was too uncertain. I didn’t want to waste more time on this.
“The divorce is already finalized. Does it really matter when you physically hold the certificate?”
“Yes, it does.”
Every day the secret was kept, I remained the nominal Mrs. Grayson. I had to keep playing my part beside Zane. But after everything that had happened recently, I just wanted out.
Victoria clearly hadn’t expected that her precious son was someone I couldn’t wait to be rid of. She suppressed her anger. “One month,” she stated firmly. “That should be acceptable, shouldn’t it?”
After all, Zane had no feelings for me. She could easily arrange introductions to other society daughters around New Year’s. He might well move on quickly.
I lowered my eyes, hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Alright.”
But I needed to be sure.
After leaving the study, I forwarded the photo of the divorce certificate Victoria had sent me yesterday to Chloe.
[Chloe, can you check if this divorce certificate is real?]
[OMG?! You got it?!] she replied instantly. [You think it’s fake?]
[I’m ninety percent sure it’s real.] But I couldn’t risk that ten percent.

The Grayson family had all gathered upstairs to toast the old lady. Even Amelia was there, hovering near Zane. As I approached, the old lady beckoned me over. “Elara, where have you been? I’ve been waiting.”
“I was just chatting with Mom,” I said obediently, handing her the gift I’d prepared earlier.
She took my hand and patted it. “Go sit by Zane.”
There was an empty seat next to him. I walked over, head down, but before. I could sit, Amelia spoke up. “Grandmother, Max has been asking to come back and wish you a happy birthday, but unfortunately he was injured a few days ago… He’s still in the hospital.”
“Max was injured?” The old lady’s expression tightened. “What happened?”
Max was the only bloodline left by her eldest grandson. Though she didn’t care for Amelia, she adored her great–grandson.
Zane immediately shot Amelia a warning look.
The old lady was usually gentle, but when it came to family discipline, she was stern. If this came out, I’d be the one punished.
Amelia hesitated. “You should probably ask Elara..”
The old lady looked puzzled. “Ask Elara? What does this have to do with her?”
“Grandmother… please don’t make me say.” Amelia put on a show of being reluctant, playing the victim perfectly.
