Being legally single again was the victory. The rest–Victoria probably just wanted me to keep up appearances until Zane remarried. I could play along a little longer.

“We still need to get the physical document,” Chloe insisted, less optimistic. “If the Graysons change their mind, they could mess with the records–turn that divorce right back into a marriage.”

I sighed. “I know. But Victoria won’t just hand it over.”

“What about using Gavin’s influence?” she suggested, remembering our recent, fragile truce. “In New York, only he can easily pressure the Graysons. If he stepped in, it would be simple.”

The thought of going to him made me recoil. I could already hear his mocking tone: “Didn’t you love him deeply? Now you’re scrambling for a divorce?”

Noticing the shadows under Chloe’s eyes, I changed the subject. “You stayed up again?”
