I blinked, surprised. “That was fast?”

After Max’s fall, every camera near the fire escape had mysteriously failed. The police had hit a dead end.

“Yes.” He set a takeout container on my desk. “You haven’t eaten, right? It’s from that new Thai place. Try it.”

“Okay. Thanks.” I opened the container and took a bite. “Did you see the footage?”

“Guess how Max was actually hurt?” Elias didn’t wait for an answer, his eyes filled with a disdain that wasn’t meant for me. “It wasn’t an accident.”

I swallowed a piece of curry shrimp. “Amelia did it.”

He stared. “How did you know?”

I shrugged, picking up my soup. “Just a guess.”

“But she’s his “mother“…” He sounded genuinely disturbed, struggling to comprehend it.

I looked at him over the rim of the container. “Elias, human cruelty will always surprise you.” Sometimes, people were capable of far worse than animals.

He looked at me with a new kind of respect–world–weary, yet still choosing to be decent. It was a rare combination.

“The footage is clear,” he continued. “You only ran into the stairwell after you heard the scream.” That alone proved I’d gone in to help.

“And the rest?” I prompted.

“Amelia went into the stairwell with Max. After he screamed, she ran out from a different floor, then took the elevator back to the third, thinking she’d destroyed all the evidence. She thought she could pin it all on you.”

“Now she’ll pay for it,” Elias concluded, a note of satisfaction in his voice.

“Not necessarily.” I finished my meal and began calmly clearing my desk. “With Zane involved, she might still get away with it.”

Amelia’s insistence had pushed the case toward litigation. The one truly at fault should have faced the consequences.

Elias frowned, unable to grasp how love could blind someone to such a degree. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying,” I replied, picking up my phone, “I need to call the police first and have them collect this footage.” At the very least, I could finally clear my

own name.

Upon receiving the call, the police almost immediately dispatched two officers to the clinic.

She showed her badge while asking: “Hi, NYPD. Which floor is Mrs. Grayson on?”

They were implementing their supervisor’s instructions for polite law enforcement to the fullest.

“Mrs. Grayson?”
