Chapter 98
Colorful streamers drifted down around me.
I jumped, then watched as Chloe tossed the confetti cannon aside and rushed toward me. “Baby! Congratulations on being single again!”
I looked around the brightly decorated living room and had to laugh.
It looked less like a divorce party and more like a wedding.
“Did you spend all day on this?”
“Not just me.” Chloe grinned, nodding toward the kitchen. “Elias helped. He came over this afternoon.”
All three of us had graduated from the same university. When Chloe first joined the law firm, I’d introduced her to Elias.
In her words–any human was a potential client.
Especially someone like Elias, with his family background. A prime client, really.
Over time, they’d become friends.
I was surprised. “No wonder he wasn’t at the lab today.”
“Of course. Elias knows how to prioritize.” There was a suggestive lilt in Chloe’s voice.
I shot her a look. “Don’t try to set us up.”
Things hadn’t worked with the Graysons, and Elias’s family was also old–money New York elite.
All these years, Elias had kept a good distance with me.
Not too close, not too far.
I liked it that way. It was comfortable.
“Elara.”
Elias emerged from the kitchen just then, carrying a plate while wearing an apron. He looked sunny and handsome. “Chloe told me you got the divorce certificate. Congratulations.”
I grinned and took the plate from him. “Thanks, Elias.”
I’d always known he could cook.
Whenever we visited our professor, Elias was usually the one in the kitchen.
Tonight was no different–six dishes and a soup, each looking like it belonged in a Michelin guide.
Chloe had specially brought out a bottle of red wine, pouring a glass for each of us before raising hers with a bright smile. “A toast! To Elara’s freedom and courage! To the even better version of herself from here on out!”
Speeches like this always got to me.
I blinked back tears and clinked my glass with theirs. “Yes. To freedom.”
Freedom.

Chapter 98
Even as a child, I’d dreamed of it in my sleep.
Even though I’d already eaten at the restaurant, my plate was soon piled high.
Probably because freedom just tasted that good.
After dinner, Elias volunteered to help clean up.
I shook my head. “Elias, you cooking was more than enough. We’ve got the cleanup. Let me at least walk you downstairs.”
“Alright.” He didn’t insist.
Knowing we’d be drinking, he hadn’t driven.
I hadn’t had much, but each step still felt a little unsteady.
I kept my pace even as I walked Elias down.
He knew about my low alcohol tolerance–this wasn’t the first time. Luckily, this high–end residential area had good security. He slowed his steps slightly and glanced down at me. “I can wait for the car myself. You should go back up and rest.”
“Mm…” I shook my head stubbornly and kept walking toward the curb. “No. A host should see her guest out.”
