Neil agreed quickly and immediately turned the steering wheel.
In the late night hours, the roads were quite clear. Before long, the car Elias had hailed arrived.
Before getting in the car, Elias looked gently at the girl beside him, his movements slowing as he adjusted her scarf: “Elara, I also wish that your future
life will be free and smooth.”
“Good.”
Elara nodded vigorously, but her steps were already unsteady, and she instantly felt top–heavy.
Her body swayed, and she had to hold onto the car door to steady herself.
Elias couldn’t help but laugh: “Go upstairs quickly.”
“You’re the guest, you leave first.”
Elara was very insistent on doing what a good host should do.
Elias had no choice but to get in the car first.
There was a 24–hour security guard nearby, so nothing would happen.
Elara’s POV
I watched Elias’s car disappear into the flow of traffic before turning, satisfied, to head back inside. All I wanted now was a hot bath and to fall face–first into bed.
I hadn’t even made it two steps before the sharp blare of a car horn sliced through the quiet street behind me. I spun around, my heart giving a hard, sudden thump against my ribs.
Through the rolled–down window of a black sedan, I saw Gavin’s infuriatingly handsome face.
His features were sharp and defined like a sculpture, his complexion a shade too pale. His eyes, a striking sapphire–blue, held a gaze that was unnervingly sharp yet dangerously captivating.
The cold air helped clear my head a little. “Mr. Windsor? What is it? Is something wrong?” I asked.
As I spoke, I caught my own reflection in his car window-
a deep crimson scarf wrapped around my neck, my smooth, silky blonde hair falling loose around my shoulders. The picture of a prim and proper good girl.
A long time ago, Gavin always said I looked like a total goody–two–shoes, or a nerd,
I never agreed with that assessment. I’ve always known myself well.
What men saw as “good” was just a convenient facade for me, a way to blend into the background. But anytime, anytime, someone crossed a line, I would defend my own bottom line and protect my own interests.
I’ve always stayed true to myself.
He stared at me for a long moment, his intense eyes taking me in, before he finally, slowly, let his gaze drop.
“I need to speak with Project Lead Windsor about the project’s progress,” he said, his tone coolly professional.

Chapter 99
Since starting at the clinic, I’d never had to work overtime in the middle of the night.
If it were an emergency, fine.
But this wasn’t urgent.
“Project progress is logged weekly by the assistant and sent to your email by the lead.”
“I want to hear about today’s progress.” He raised a brow. “Unless Team Leader Windsor doesn’t feel like working anymore?”
Damn capitalist.
I took a slow breath, trying to organize my wine–fogged thoughts, but the cold wind made my words come out stiff. “Today, my team and I advanced the proposal from last week…”
“Get in the car and talk.” His eyes held mine, matter–of–fact. “The window’s open. I’m cold.”
I got in.
Then, as clearly and logically as I could, I walked him through the report. I wanted to sound responsible. Professional. Irreplaceable. I laid out every detail, knowing research and development wasn’t something a non–expert could easily follow.
But Gavin listened patiently to all of it. Then, slowly, he asked a question that had nothing to do with any of it.
“Aren’t you afraid of Zane finding out you let men into your home this late?”
