Isabel was exhausted. The moment she was back in bed, she fell asleep. Dylan sat on the sofa, keeping an eye on her IV drip. When one bag finished, he called a nurse to change it. By the time the last bag was empty, Isabel was awake.
She went to the bathroom, and when she came out, Dylan had dinner laid out for her. She sat down and began to eat with her left hand.
"Mom."
The piece of food Isabel had just picked up fell from her chopsticks. She hadn't expected Oliver to come looking for her. She had assumed he was so wrapped up with Selena that he had forgotten all about his own mother.
Oliver walked to her bedside, his face etched with grievance. "Mom, can you come home and cook for me now? I threw up my lunch today. The food is gross. I want my Spider-Man pancakes."
So that was it. A flicker of warmth that had sparked in Isabel's heart at the sight of him died out. She had thought, for a moment, that despite her decision to waive custody, the child she had raised still cared enough to visit her. Hearing his words, her heart settled back into a calm stillness.
"I told you this morning," Isabel said, her tone even. "You can't be a picky eater anymore. You will eat what Martha cooks for you. Besides, I can't cook right now."
His special meals required carving or arranging various vegetables and meats into shapes he liked, such as superheroes. It took a great deal of time, energy, and dexterity. When he was her precious son, she had done it without a second thought. As a housewife, that was her job. But after yesterday, seeing his blatant preference for Selena, she had lost the will. Moreover, if she wanted to return to the lab, she needed to let her right hand heal perfectly. She would no longer do anything that could jeopardize its recovery.
"Mom, are you still mad because I went to see Auntie Selena?" Oliver's temper began to show. "You're so petty. Auntie Selena is Daddy's sister and my good friend. Seeing her is the same as seeing you, or Great-Grandma, or Martha."
"Mom, why can't you just get along with Auntie Selena? Shouldn't Daddy's sister be your sister, too?"
