Selena was gone from the lab for a full month.
But in Lab 14, the industry experts specially recruited by Adrian were still conducting experiments every day.
Isabel also spent that entire month immersed in the lab.
Although her right hand wasn't what it used to be, it no longer trembled when she held a test tube.
She had also found a better way to handle the precise measurements and mixing.
With her foundational work on Y-1, her research on Y-2 was much more intuitive.
If it weren't for her injured hand, she would have been much faster than Selena.
She circled a date on her calendar. The day before the cooling-off period ended, she called Adrian.
It rang, but no one answered.
She tried several more times.
Still no answer.
She had no choice but to call Daniel.
Daniel didn't answer his phone either.
She frowned.
Adrian had lost all credibility with her.
She was genuinely afraid he would go back on his word and torment her.
Dragging out the divorce, leaving her in limbo.
So she bought some nutritional supplements and went to see old Mrs. Blackwell, hoping to get some information indirectly.
But old Mrs. Blackwell had fallen ill.
She lay in bed, her face pale and drawn. It seemed to take a great effort just to open her eyes.
Isabel couldn't bring herself to mention the divorce.
"Isabel..."
"Grandma, I'm here."
"Did you come to see me about something?"
"No." Isabel held her frail hand, wondering how the spirited old woman from her eightieth birthday celebration could have withered so suddenly just a short time later. She could almost feel a deathly aura emanating from her. "I just came to see you."
Old Mrs. Blackwell understood everything. She was aware of all their comings and goings, but she no longer had the strength to intervene. "Stay here for a while. Keep me company."
Isabel had no reason to refuse. "Okay, Grandma. I'll cook for you. Tell me what you'd like to eat. I can make all sorts of things."
Old Mrs. Blackwell raised a hand to stroke her face. "Isabel, if this heart of mine is still viable, find a suitable match. When I'm gone, have it transplanted so your mother can live a little longer."
Once she was gone, there would be no one left in this world to genuinely protect and cherish Isabel.
That father of hers was worse than having no father at all.
