As he ran, he called Selena. “Auntie Selena, Dad and I are home! Are you having dinner? Aw, I wanted to have dinner with you. I don’t know why Dad had to come back here...”
Isabel couldn’t hear the rest.
Nor did she want to.
Instead, she looked at the man striding toward her and asked directly, “Mr. Blackwell, which of the conditions in the divorce agreement are you dissatisfied with?”
Adrian sat down in a lone armchair, glanced at the coffee table, and sneered, “You talk about divorce, yet you still act like you’re Mrs. Blackwell.”
Isabel was starting to realize that no matter what she did now, he could twist it into a thousand different meanings.
Because of her “past transgressions,” he would never believe a word she said.
She had hoped to discuss the divorce peacefully tonight.
But he seemed determined to provoke her.
“The Blackwells are one of the most prominent families in Westbridge. What, you don't even offer guests tea and snacks? Aren’t you afraid of becoming a laughingstock if word gets out?”
“If you don’t tell,” Adrian replied coolly, “who will know?”
He was still worried about the Blackwells finding out about the divorce.
But she wasn't the one who had told them.
Isabel couldn’t explain, nor did she have the energy to.
“Grandma has already agreed, and this is what you’ve always wanted. Let’s just get this over with, Mr. Blackwell. Let’s finalize the divorce.”
Adrian reached for his tie again, and finding none, tugged at his collar.
He must have used too much force, because a button popped off and hit Isabel squarely in the face.
“...”
Isabel squeezed her eyes shut, but she couldn't hold back her anger. “Adrian, just because I used to grovel at your feet doesn’t mean I will for the rest of my life!”
She was too furious to sit still, jumping to her feet with her hands on her hips. “Apologize to me!”
Adrian stood up as well. A faint flicker of a smile seemed to cross his eyes as he glanced at the small red mark the button had left on her face.
But his voice was as cold and clipped as ever. “Upstairs.”
