"What kind of mess is this?" Dorothea snapped before Grace could finish. "How many more shocking secrets does that whore have that I don't know about?"
She turned on Donovan, her eyes burning with rage. "Explain yourself. You knew from the start that her private life was a mess. Why were you so determined to marry her just to spite me? Were you out of your mind?"
Donovan said nothing. Hands shoved in his pockets, he turned away and strode to the window, staring out in silence.
"Grandma, Mom." Zachary couldn't help but chime in from the bed. "Stop insulting Giselle. Now that she's already married to Uncle Don, let's just put the past behind us. Dredging it up just makes everyone miserable."
Grace glared at him. "You're still defending that wretch? Look at you, beaten to a pulp! If it weren't for her, our family would be fine. We wouldn't keep running into disaster after disaster!"
Hearing them lash out at Giselle again, Donovan couldn't take it anymore. He couldn't be bothered to explain anything, so without a word, he stormed out of the ward.
"Mom, you two stay with Zach. I'm leaving too," Ethan said.
"Stop right there!" Grace shrieked. "You think I don't know you're going to see that bastard? If you really care about Zach and want him to recover quickly, you should stay here and not let him down."
Ethan froze, caught between staying and leaving. Only then did Dorothea finally side with Grace.
"Exactly. Why are you leaving now?" Dorothea chided. "The doctors said Zach's injuries are worse. This is the time to show you care, not to run off."
Maybe because he knew Gideon's wounds were less severe, Ethan eventually decided to stay, his expression sullen.
