Giselle caught the hollow, devastated look in Renee's eyes and knew the old woman was barely holding on. If she had chosen that moment to humiliate her, Renee wouldn't have had the strength to fight back.
But Giselle held her tongue. Wounding someone already at rock bottom felt meaningless.
She merely glanced at Renee and said, "Now you finally understand how my grandparents felt when they saw their daughter's corpse."
Before Renee could reply, Giselle turned away and slammed the door shut behind her.
Inside, Vivienne sat in shambles. She hadn't overheard the exchange, but the emptiness in her eyes told Giselle enough.
"So, what's your decision?" Giselle asked, pouring her a glass of water. "When are you planning to get rid of the baby?"
"Stop talking!" Vivienne snapped, cutting her off. "Do you have any idea how cruel you sound? The man I loved just died horribly a few days ago. I wake up every night from nightmares of his death, and I'm falling apart. Yet all you care about is pushing me to have an abortion. Do you really think that makes you noble?
Giselle stiffened, then demanded, "So you've been planning to marry into the Holt family all along? You want to become the daughter-in-law of the woman I despise? Did my warnings mean nothing to you?"
"Sebastian loved me and wanted this baby," Vivienne said quietly. "Of course I dreamed of marrying him. I even asked him to bring in a private doctor to check the baby's gender. When I learned it was a boy, I was overjoyed for days. Who could've imagined it would all end in tragedy?"
"A boy doesn't change anything," Giselle dismissed sharply. "You'll never win against Renee. To her, you're nothing more than a vessel for her grandson. The moment the baby is born, she'll take him from you. You'll be left with nothing—not the child, not the family, not even a cent."
