By the time Giselle arrived at the detention center, Ethan was already there. The reporters had caught wind of the situation and were waiting in full force, hoping to capture the first moments after Donovan's release.
Before long, two police officers escorted Donovan out. As his older brother, Ethan was the first to rush forward, while the reporters swarmed with microphones and cameras.
Having already announced their divorce at yesterday's press conference, Giselle had to remain cautious in front of so many reporters. She pulled sunglasses and a mask from her bag, put them on, and slightly concealed her identity before approaching from the side.
She had planned to reach Donovan and offer a few words of comfort, but the throng of reporters blocked her path. All she could do was stay on the sidelines, watching like a stranger. The irony of it wasn't lost on her.
All the effort she had poured into the past few days had led to this moment, yet now that he was right in front of her, she didn't dare approach him. As his legal wife, she should have been the first to greet him, but instead, she could only watch from the edge of the crowd.
After nearly a week in detention, Donovan appeared sullen and worn. There wasn't a trace of joy on his face. He simply wore a dark, brooding expression and remained completely silent in response to the reporters' questions.
Ethan stepped in, offering a few polite words on Donovan's behalf. Two assistants helped push back the crowd, clearing a path and guiding Donovan toward the waiting vehicle.
By the time he reached the car, Giselle was already there.
When their eyes met, they froze for a few seconds.
"Get in the car," Ethan urged. "Let's leave quickly. These reporters are relentless."
After days of frantic effort to secure Donovan's release, Ethan didn't want to risk another detention. The fastest way was to return to their own country. Even if complications arose later, it would be easier than dealing with them in a foreign land.
The car sped toward the airport.
In the car, Donovan leaned back in his seat, silent as ever. Whether it was the stress from the case or something else, he looked unusually cold, as if the detention had erased a part of him.
Likewise, Giselle remained silent, making no move to speak to him. She simply stared blankly out at the passing scenery.
In the back, Ethan grew uneasy at the heavy silence. He cleared his throat and tried to break the tension with casual conversation.
