"Hello?" Gideon answered in an exhausted and low-pitched voice.
Ethan had called to talk about a recent acquisition. He snapped at Gideon when he detected the latter's tone. "Where are you? You missed a few of my calls! What trouble are you up to again?"
Gideon felt like he was dying inside. "I'm at a hospital in Trenesville. Something's happened."
"What's wrong?"
Sounding defeated, Gideon told Ethan about the rock climbing incident and Giselle's current state. After that, he hung up and started smoking nonstop outside the hospital.
Half an hour later, he wandered to the operating room to take a look, anticipating yet fearing the moment the doors flung open.
Multiple bad scenarios flashed through his mind. He repeatedly replayed that moment she fell off the cliff, and the more he did, the more suffocated he felt.
In the end, he punched the wall hard to release his frustration.
After two torturous hours, he looked up and caught a glimpse of a tall guy hurrying toward the operating room.
He was none other than Donovan.
It turned out that Ethan had called Donovan and told him everything upon hearing about the incident.
Donovan, who was participating in an important directors' meeting, immediately halted the meeting when he got the news. Without hesitation, he drove all the way to Trenesville while spamming Giselle's phone number.
She did not pick up at all.
That made him anxious. He sped down the highway to Trenesville.
His body ached from the fall, and his face throbbed with pain. Still, he didn't fight back—he couldn't.
He sat there, slumped against the floor, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand.
A fleeting thought crossed his mind. Maybe being beaten to death wouldn't be so bad. At least it would spare him this endless torment.
Donovan, too, no longer had the strength to keep lashing out. His eyes, filled only with agony, stayed fixed on that tightly closed door. He dreaded the bad news that might come at any moment. Again, he felt as if he were being torn apart.
The waiting dragged on.
One crouched in a corner, the other leaned against the wall. They started off feeling aggrieved and furious, but they both eventually sank into utter silence.
No one knew how long had passed. It wasn't until night had fallen entirely that, at last, the operating room doors opened.
