Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 510

Several people rushed over to restrain Donovan, stopping him from opening the box. The Kanes were only worried that seeing the ashes would traumatize him, so everyone scrambled to hold him back.

At the same time, Ethan instructed Zachary, "Zach, pick up the box and set it down somewhere safe. Don't let your uncle touch it."

However, Grace scowled and grabbed Zachary's arm. "Why are you even reaching for that? Just being near it is bad luck. Haven't you suffered enough because of her while she was alive? Stay right there. Don't you dare touch it."

Ethan muttered under his breath, "Everyone here is either older than Giselle or her equal. Zach is the only one younger. He's practically like a nephew to her, so it's not unusual for him to handle her ashes."

"Stop with the nonsense," Grace snapped.

She still refused to let her son touch Giselle's ashes, but Zachary didn't let that stop him.

As Zachary watched Donovan in unbearable pain, memories of Giselle flooded back. Without hesitation, he stepped forward and lifted the small box.

The thought of Giselle, once so stunning and radiant, now reduced to ashes in that tiny box, tore at his heart. His eyes burned as he gently placed it on the table in the memorial hall.

The housekeepers quietly began tidying the memorial items Donovan had knocked over.

Dorothea understood his reasoning. After all, sometimes a brief pain is better than prolonged suffering. Once Donovan got through the worst of these days, grief would fade over time. In a year or two, he could return to normal life, remarry, and have a family again.

By keeping him from witnessing Giselle's death or seeing her placed in the crematorium, he would be spared those painful memories.

To avoid further upsetting Donovan, the funeral ceremony was canceled entirely. Ethan first saw off the few distant relatives and friends who had arrived. Then he turned to Gideon, who had been silent in the corner for some time, and whispered, "You should leave too. It's over. Don't stir things up here."

Gideon said nothing.
