After Donovan's slap sent Anne sprawling to the ground, he kicked the lilies, scattering the flowers everywhere.
When he turned and saw Anne's garish red outfit and her lips painted a shocking crimson, his anger flared even higher, and he lifted his foot to strike her again.
Anne screamed and rolled to the side. She shouted at him, "How dare you use violence against me, a defenseless woman? How can you be so vile? Don't you realize I'm pregnant with Zach's baby? I'm expecting. If you hurt me and cause a miscarriage, do you know what the consequences would be?"
For the first time, Anne relied entirely on her pregnancy as a shield. She had no fear of the enraged man before her. If anything happened, she could use it as legal leverage against him.
Donovan held back from kicking her, but it wasn't because he worried about her being pregnant or feared getting in legal trouble. He just couldn't bring himself to do something so disgusting in front of Giselle's grave. On top of that, knowing the baby was Zachary's made him think about how Zachary would feel. In the end, he managed to restrain himself.
Donovan's restraint only made Anne feel untouchable.
She hauled herself to her feet and continued taunting him. "Donovan, who would have thought you'd lose control like this? Loving her now does you no good. She's gone, turned to dust. If you're so devoted, sleep by her grave every night, move your bed here, and keep her company. That's what love really is."
Just as she was about to let go, Donovan decided it was time to take real action.
Standing at the gravesite, Donovan coldly stared at Anne as she walked away. For the first time, he fixed his gaze on her without looking away. In the past, he had foolishly let her slip away again and again.
The truth was, he had never cared enough to deal with her. His time was too valuable, and he reserved it only for those who truly mattered, whether in love or in hate. Anne had never been one of them, and because of that, her petty schemes had never deserved his attention.
