Gideon stepped outside and realized that the visitor was Ethan.
Over the past year, Ethan had only come to Cambria twice. Most of the time, they kept in touch through video calls or phone conversations, during which Ethan would ask about Gideon and Giselle's situation there.
"What are you doing here?" Gideon asked. Although he had long accepted Ethan as his father, he still couldn't bring himself to say the word "Dad", so he simply avoided addressing him altogether.
Ethan hadn't brought his driver or assistant this time. He had driven himself from his place in the city to the countryside villa and walked straight in.
"Where is she?" he asked as he stepped into the quiet, empty living room.
"I took her for a swim earlier. She got a little tired, so I had her go to bed early," Gideon said.
A hint of irritation crept in as he added, "Why didn't you tell me you were coming? Couldn't we have dealt with this over the phone?"
"I came to Wexhaven to meet a client," Ethan replied. "After that, I figured I'd stop by. It's been over a year since you last returned home. What are your plans?"
"What plans could I possibly have?" Gideon said, sliding one hand into his pocket and turning slightly to the side. "I'll stay here and keep taking care of her. She just recovered, and she can't be without me."
Ethan's expression darkened at that.
After a few seconds of silence, Ethan finally said, "Gideon, I let you stay here for the past year because she was badly injured. Now that she's fully recovered, I can't let you continue wasting your time.
"I've been covering for your company back home for a year, but I don't know the business as well as you do. Your industry moves quickly. If you miss a single opportunity, profits fall by several points. Keep going like this, and I won't have the money to keep fixing the losses."
"And one more thing—keep a close watch on Giselle," Ethan added. "We've introduced Donovan to a new woman. They're seeing each other now, and if everything goes smoothly, they'll be engaged in a month and married shortly after. Your grandmother is very pleased with her, and she's a perfect match for the Kane family.
"The Kane family has been a mess these past two years thanks to Tony's two daughters. It's about time things quieted down now that those two are gone. I want the Kane family to stay peaceful from now on. So keep Giselle in check and don't let her stir up trouble again."
Gideon gave a short nod. "I know what to do."
Ethan glared at him again. He had meant to scold him further but chose instead to take on the role of a concerned father. He patted Gideon on the shoulder and said, "We've been father and son for years.
"You know better than anyone how I've treated you. Even if I haven't officially brought you into the family, nothing changes the fact that you're my son, so stop constantly going against me. Everything I do is for your own good."
