After leaving Donovan's office, Marselle received a call from Dorothea inviting her to dinner at Kane Manor that evening. She paused for a moment, then smiled and accepted.
By evening, Marselle arrived at Kane Manor, chauffeured by the Kanes' driver. Inside, a lavish dinner had been laid out, and Dorothea, Ethan, and Grace were already there. They welcomed her warmly, with a level of politeness and friendliness that far surpassed anything Anne had ever received.
The Sterlings were a wealthy and influential family in their own right, able to match the Kanes in status and power. As the youngest child and only daughter among four brothers, Marselle had been cherished her entire life. She was a true heiress in every sense, capable and impressive in all aspects of life.
The Kanes naturally treated her with great respect, while also hoping she would marry Donovan and become the family's official daughter-in-law.
"Marselle, come sit," Dorothea said, taking her hand and guiding her to a seat.
She smiled warmly. "We invited your father, but he couldn't come. Make yourself at home and enjoy your meal."
"Thank you, Mrs. Kane Senior," Marselle said politely.
As she glanced around and saw that only a few people were present, she asked, "By the way, is Donovan not coming tonight? Should we wait for him?"
"No need," Ethan explained. "He's always busy. I had already told him we'd have dinner together tonight, but he just texted me saying he couldn't make it because of a meeting."
"I see," Marselle said, feeling slightly disappointed.
"You're being ridiculous," Grace snapped. "Ms. Sterling is going to be engaged to Don. Doesn't she deserve to know his past? She can only decide whether to accept him if she knows the full truth. Hiding it from her is pointless."
"Enough, Grace," Dorothea said, silencing her. "I'll explain everything to Marselle privately. For now, let's just focus on light conversation during dinner."
Marselle truly didn't know much about Donovan's past. She only knew that he was the CEO of Kane Group, that his wife had passed away a year ago, that he had no children, and that he was currently single. Otherwise, he seemed perfect in every way.
Ethan certainly hoped she would marry Donovan soon, so he said, "Marselle, you've spent a week getting to know Don and should have a good sense of him by now. If you don't have any objections, we can arrange a meeting with your parents next Friday to discuss the engagement."
