Chapter 16 

David woke up again in the hospital, suffering from severe concussion after a week–long coma. 

He saw Debra Green at his bedside, her face etched with worry that hardened the moment he opened his eyes. 

“David, I always believed you had integrity–unlike your bastard father. 

But… you’ve let me down terribly.” 

Debra scolded, “I know everything about you and Lisa. You wronged her. Don’t seek her out–she’ll never forgive you.” 

David’s hand trembled beneath the sheets, pain searing through him. He shook his head fiercely. “No, I will find her. 

I’ll make her forgive me. She’ll come back.” 

Years of shared history–he couldn’t let go. 

He admitted his mistakes. 

Whatever it took, he’d get Lisa Davis back. 

“Mom, I’ll handle this. 

He shut his eyes, dismissing her. 

Debra stayed briefly but left when persuasion failed. 

Years ago, David’s father died in a plane crash while eloping with his mistress. 

Debra’s hatred for him shaped David’s upbringing: love demanded absolute loyalty. 

She once believed David’s love for Lisa was eternal. 

Washing her hands of him, she prayed Lisa wouldn’t suffer twice. 

After Diana Rivera left, David discharged himself. 

He confronted Helen Gonzalez with investigation files. Imprisoned for a week, she looked gaunt. 

Spotting David, she lunged forward. “David! You came! 

Let me out–I’m starving. The baby’s starving too.” 

She pressed his hand against her belly, banking on paternal mercy. 

“Forgive me, please? 

I never hurt Lisa before–I just lost my way, tried competing with her.
