Lia
When I stepped into the witches council building I knew it wasn’t going to go my way. I sat down, waiting to speak with someone but they kept me waiting for a while until I realized it was over an hour after I arrived!
Just when I was going to get up and complain, someone motioned for me to come back and follow them. The woman who I sat across sounded like the one I spoke to on the phone a few days ago. She gazed at me, looking less them impressed as I was here.
“Ms. Brown I thought I made it clear what you and your pack was supposed to do.”
I took a slow, deep breath. “Yes and as stated in my email, the dragon shifter you captured said that there were others who were going to wake up eventually.”
“We already know that.”
“Which is why I thought you would respond to my email about trying to pin down where the Rosewater Coven has gone.” She sighed. “Ms. Brm11Jn, this is on you. You and your pack sent them running so it is up to all of you to track them down.” “Are you telling me that you have no idea where the hell they are and haven’t even bothered to try?”
The same impassive look remained on her face. It was like she wasn’t even worried about the fact that there was going to be
some dragon shifters running around, ready to ruin our way of life.
“Yes and we have yet to find them so we have no information to give you.”
I stood up, slamming my hands against the desk “I bet you’re not even trying, are you?”
This time the woman grew angry. She stood up, leaning over her desk so our faces were inches away from each other.
“It is on you. We will do our part to prepare for the war, but as for finding them? That is on you so it’s best you leave my sight because we have no more to say to one another.”
With a frustrated growl, I stormed out of the room and slammed the door shut behind me. They were beyond annoying. How could they refuse to help me? What they wanted was for war to happen and then to blame it on the wolves.
Deep in my gut, I felt like this was the truth. Witches never liked wolves or vampires. They felt they were better than the rest of us because they were more aligned with humans than we were.
It was frustrating and now I had to go home to tell my mates about this.

Second I am home, I turn to my mates and sigh.
“They’re gone,” I say, crossing my arms, trying to hold it together. Colby looks up, brow furrowed. “What?”
“The Rosewater clan. The only ones who knew how to put the dragons back to sleep. And we drove them out last year.”
Colby straightens up, the familiar tactical focus taking over his face. “All right. We start looking. Someone has to know where they went. We ask around, dig through old records-whatever it takes.”
Rain raises a hand like he’s about to suggest something insane, which, in my experience, he usually does. “Or… hear me out… we get in a car and start tracking them the old-fashioned way.”
Colby raises an eyebrow, clearly not amused. “That your idea of a plan?” Rain grins like he’s already won. “No, it’s my idea of a road trip.” Silence. Then, someone in the back snickers.
Despite everything, I feel a small smile tug at my lips. It’s ridiculous, but that’s exactly why I need it. Colby groans, rubbing his forehead. “Rain, this isn’t a vacation.”
“Sure, sure,” Rain says, waving a dismissive hand as if what he just said didn’t matter at all. “But technically, it is a long drive with unpredictable stops, high stakes, and a group of people stuck together for way too many hours. Sounds like a road trip to me.”
I shake my head, the ridiculousness of it all creeping into my brain. “This is serious.”
“I know,” Rain smirks, not even pretending to be serious. “Still doesn’t change the fact that we’re doing it. So… bags packed, or what?”
Colby sighs, shoulders slumping, but I can see it in his eyes-he’s already caving. “Fine. Let’s move.” Rain fist-pumps like he’s just won a battle. “Hell yeah! Road trip!”
I can’t help it. The corners of my mouth twitch into a grin. This is going to be a disaster, but at least we’ll be in it together.
