Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 109

Lia

The one person I had yet to talk to about this upcoming road was my brother. He was one of the most important people in my life so I had to go talk with him about this. My problem was I waited until the last minute. We were already packing to leave. I knew my brother had to figure we were going somewhere but everyone wanted me to talk to him.

Finally, minutes before we had to go, I sat next to him and smiled softly.

“Michael, I have to go,” I said, my voice firm this time. “The dragons won’t stop unless we do something.”

He gave me a knowing look, like he had already made peace with it. “I know,” he replied, shaking his head slightly. “But I trust you, Lia. You and the wolf pack can handle it.”

I paused, watching him closely. “You’re okay with this?”

What I wanted was for my brother to come with me. But he had Gabi and the twins. Simone and her mates were going to help as well. They were going to travel alongside us. At least there would be a good number of us trying to find this coven.

If we could find this coven. It was hard to believe that they had vanished a year ago. How were we supposed to find someone who went missing all those months ago?

The last we spoke to them we threatened them. Our pack told them that if they didn’t leave the area then we were going to finish the job. Maybe not in so many words, but this was basically what we meant.

And they had stayed away, leaving us the hell alone. At first, I thought it was going to be great that I didn’t have to deal with this coven. Now we found ourselves trying to find them! It was truly a strange turn of events. What the hell was I going to do? What were we going to do?

He smirked, the familiar glint in his eyes. “You think I’d stop you? It’s your fight too.”

I let out a small laugh. “Yeah, but it’s not just my fight. The dragons… they’re all of us now.”

He sighed, stepping closer and placing a hand on my shoulder. “I’m not worried about you. You’ve always known what to do. But promise me you’ll be careful out there, all right?”

“Always am,” I replied with a grin, but my eyes softened. “I won’t let anything happen to us. To you either.”

“Good,” he said, clapping me on the back. “Just come back in one piece. The fort’s gonna need you when this is all over. Along with the guys.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll be there with them,” I said, an amused glint in my eye.”

He laughed. “All of you better come back here. Gabi, me, and the twins are waiting for you, you know?”

I met his gaze, seeing the same determination that was in me. “I will. I’m not done yet, Michael. Not by a long shot.” He gave me a brief nod like he was already letting go. “Go. And don’t worry about Gabi or the kids. I’ve got it covered.” I smiled, grateful. “Thanks. I won’t let you down.”

With that, I turned toward the road ahead, the weight of everything that was coming still heavy, but somehow lighter with his trust behind me.

As I grabbed my bag and started to head toward the door, Michael called after me.

“You’re not taking the truck, are you?” he asked, looking over at me with a raised eyebrow.

The truck was an old vehicle of our parents. Now that I was driving, I decided that I wanted to drive it because it was a way for me to have part of my parents with me while I drove.

Some of the guys would be in the truck with me while the others would be taking another car. The more cars we brought with us, the more ground we could cover. This was why it was so important for us to take more vehicles.

I paused, glancing back at him with a smirk “Why, you don’t think I can handle it?”

He chuckled, his arms crossed. “I didn’t say that. I just think you might need more than a ‘slightly functional’ vehicle to take on dragons.”

I laughed. “Oh, please. It’s practically a classic.” “It’s a death trap, Lia.”

I waved him off, already starting toward the old truck. “That’s what makes it charming.”

He shook his head, smiling despite himself. “Well, don’t be surprised if you end up with a flat tire in the middle of nowhere.” “I’ll just blame it on the dragons,” I said with a wink “They do like to leave a trail of destruction.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Sure, blame it on them. But when you end up stranded, don’t come crying to me.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” I grinned, stepping out the door and pausing for just a moment. “Besides, I’ve got you for backup. You know you’re always my emergency contact in case of dragon-related incidents.”

Michael snorted. “I thought that was what Simone was for.”

“She is back up,” I said with a shrug. “You’re the first on speed dial.”

“Just promise me you won’t use up all your jokes while you’re gone,” he said, trying to look serious but failing. “You’ll need them when you come back”

I said I wasn’t going to complain but here I was complaining and doing it out loud too. Lia sighed softly while Matt slowly turned his gaze towards me.

It reminded me of Jesse, causing me to shiver in fear. I tried to scoot away but we were in a truck so there was nowhere for me to move!

“What, it’s true!” I defended.

Matt pinched the bridge of his nose. “This was never supposed to be a fun road trip, Rain. The point of this road trip isn’t to travel but rather to find this coven that has become elusive!”

Oh, he was pissed at me. I felt bad for pushing him, but boredom and I did not get along. This was an emotion I hated feeling. How was I going to put it back in the bag when it was already out?

The truck continued to rumble down the highway, the road stretching endlessly ahead. The atmosphere in the truck was way too tense for my liking. Everyone was focused, brooding, and thinking too hard about our mission. Boring.

I decided to fix that. Plus it was a great way for me to get over my boredom. It was still affecting me so I figured if I started singing, it would help.

The radio wasn’t working in here so this was my only option right now! Between silence and making my music, I’d rather make my own. It was easier this way.

Clearing my throat, I started belting out the first road trip song that came to mind. “On the road again-just can’t wait to get on the road ag-“

“Shut up,” Matt cut in, his voice flat, not even bothering to look at me.

I grinned, undeterred. “C’mon, man, we need some travel vibes! What’s a road trip without music'” Matt turned slightly, finally giving me a look. “If you don’t shut up, I’m throwing you out of the truck” I gasped, clutching my chest. “You wouldn’t dare-“

Right at that moment, the truck hit a small bump in the road, jolting me forward. I barely caught myself, my hands gripping the seat.

Lia snickered from the driver’s seat. I shut my mouth.

“Thought so,” Matt muttered, turning back to stare out the window. Okay. Maybe the road trip soundtrack would have to wait.
