Matt
I can say that, without a doubt, I hate climbing. And hiking.
Actually, I hate everything to do with outdoorsy crap.
We have spent so much time outside lately it’s been driving me insane. I am so tired of roughing it when all I want to do is lay on a comfortable bed-preferably my bed.
Why haven’t I been able to sleep in my own bed? Oh yeah because we are trying to prevent the end of the world.
I don’t say any of this out loud because it would be pretty damn selfish of me to do that. Lia is doing this not because she wants too but because she has too. She has no choice but to follow these visions and accept the growing power inside her.
It started after she touched that relic.
I personally blamed the Dragonstone itself. That weird, glowing little stone caused Lia to have the initial vision and this power. But why? That was the biggest question.
Why did fate decide that she was going to go thorough exactly what Harry Potter went through? In no uncertain terms was being the boy who lived a good thing for him! He faced trial after trial, nearly losing his life and the lives of his friends more than once.
But again, I kept quiet about it. Why was I going to say anything when it would do nothing but make the situation even more difficult?
Lia glanced over at me, smiling faintly. “Matt, are you stewing?”
I balked. “No, I’m not stewing! Why would you ask such a weird thing?”
“Because you have a scowl on your face, Matt. Do you think I haven’t learned to memorize all your facial expressions by this point in our relationship?”
I huffed. “Okay, fine, I am stewing, but I assure you that it has nothing to do with you, Lia. It’s more the fact that I am stuck being outside again. You know how I prefer to stay inside.”
Colby came up beside me and patted my shoulder. “Hey, don’t be such a Debbie Downer, Matt. This is a new experience, so you can either let it break you or make you.”
“Stop with the inspirational talk,” I muttered, giving him a look He just grinned. “Oh, come on, you love it.”
“No… no I don’t.”
Admittedly, it did put a smile on my face, but I tried my best to hide it. But the thing about being friends with a guy for your entire life was that he knew exactly when you were trying to hide it.
Sighing, I realized that I had no choice. I adjusted my jacket and glanced around, hoping to find some way to distract myself. Unfortunately, nothing seemed promising.
“Look,” Colby said, leaning closer, “it won’t kill you to enjoy the outdoors for once. Who knows? You might survive without your precious four walls.”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, sure. Or I might freeze to death.”
Lia laughed softly, threading her fingers through mine. “Drama queen.”

I sighed, rubbing the bridge of my nose. “Of course, this is happening. Of course, it’s never just a simple ‘go to the temple and find answers’ trip. Someone always has to make it worse.”
“That’s just how our luck works,” I muttered.
Rain groaned. “Remind me again why we’re doing this?”
“Because we don’t have a choice,” Colby said. “And because-“
“-if we don’t, something worse will happen,” Rain finished, rolling his eyes.” Yeah, yeah. I get it. I just wish ‘worse’ didn’t keep showing up so fast.”
I nudged the body with my boot. “So, we thinking ‘kill them before they learn too much,’ or ‘scare them off’?” Colby didn’t hesitate. “Kill.”
Rain grimaced. “Yeah, that tracks.”
I took a breath, trying to push down the exhaustion creeping in. “Great. So we’ve got more people out there who want us dead. Love that for us.”
Colby stood, dusting off his hands. “We need to keep moving. Their backup won’t be far.” Rain groaned again. “Ugh. Can we get, like, one easy mission? Just one?”
I gave him a look “Not a chance.”
