Colby
The power that came from her was mind-blowing. It sent us nearly flying backwards, shaking the very ground we were standing on. I shivered, unable to wrap my mind around what was happening to her right now.
It was like Lia was burning. The power was so much we couldn’t even look in her direction without feeling like we were going to drop to our knees.
I was awed and scared shitless at the amount of power she was showing right now. It was truly something I never imagined.
The dragon burst into flames, literally disintegrating before our very eyes. I gaped, sharing shocked looks with the rest of the pack.
Did that seriously just happen? There was no way that happened. But it did.
Slowly, we approached Lia. She was just standing there.
Lia turned to look at us, her eyes blazing but then it was gone and this exhausted expression took over.
“I-” she started to say but the words came out slurred. I reached towards her, sensing that she was going to collapse at any moment now but I knew there was nothing else I could do except try to catch her.
Then Lia beat us to it.
Lia dropped to the ground.
One second, she was standing and the next she was on the ground. I felt shocked, but knew it was bound to happen.
It was more than a little jarring. My chest tightened as I rushed to her side, my instincts screaming to help, to do something. The others weren’t far behind.
“Lia!” I barely registered my own voice. My knees hit the dirt as I skidded next to her, hands hovering uselessly over her limp form. Her breathing was shallow, but it was there. Thank God.
Jesse crouched beside me, his face unreadable.
“She’s alive,” I said, mostly for myself. The words felt rough in my throat. Jesse didn’t move, didn’t blink. “What the hell was that?”
I swallowed hard. “I don’t know.”
That wasn’t what I wanted to say. I wanted to have an answer, any answer, but I didn’t. And the fact that Jesse didn’t either? That made it worse.
I exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through my hair. It was shaking. Damn it. I clenched my fingers into a fist. “That power… that wasn’t normal. Not even for an omega.”
“No.” Jesse’s voice was quiet, but firm. “It wasn’t.”
I looked at him, then back at Lia, at the way she lay too still, too pale. It didn’t fit-not after what she’d just done. “Did you feel it?” My voice was low, strained. “When she-“
“Yeah.” Jesse didn’t hesitate.
Of course, he felt it. We all did.
That surge of raw energy-hot, wild, completely untamed-still buzzed under my skin. Like static clinging to the air, refusing to fade.
I let out a slow breath. “She shouldn’t be able to do that.” Jesse’s jaw ticked. “I know.”
For once, he didn’t have any answers, and that… that terrified me. Silence stretched between us, thick and heavy.
Finally, I reached out, brushing a stray strand of hair from Lia’s face. “What the hell are we supposed to do with this?” My voice came out quieter than I intended.
Jesse didn’t answer right away. The only sound was the distant rustle of the forest settling after the fight, the slow rhythm of Lia’s breathing.
Then, finally-
“It changes things,” he murmured.
I huffed out a bitter laugh. “No shit.” My fingers curled against my thighs as I forced myself to pull back, to not touch her more than I already had.
“She’s not supposed to be… like this.”
Jesse’s expression didn’t shift, but something flickered in his eyes. “None of us expected it.”
“Let’s get her somewhere comfortable,” I muttered, lifting her into my arms.
We walked for awhile until we found a spot that we deemed safe enough for us to stop and relax at. While Jesse and I handled taking care of Lia, the others went around and got the camp ready. Before I knew it, everything was set up for Lia. She was tucked into the sleeping bag.
All we had to do was wait for her to come back to us.
The other guys talked about it for a while, trying to make sense of it. I didn’t want to talk about it, trying to figure it out on my own. The fact of the matter was that Lia had touched that dragon stone, causing her powers to awaken.
It was truly incredible, but as I’ve said many, many times-fucking terrifying. I didn’t know how else to take this, wishing I could protect Lia from what was going to happen but it was impossible. There was only so much I could do.
It’s not like I could take away her destiny, no matter how much I wanted to.
I ran a hand through her hair, sighing with relief when her eyes fluttered open. “Lia, you don’t know how happy I am to see you up and about!”
She groaned. “I don’t know if you can say I’m up and about with me laying here like this.” I chuckled, running a hand through her hair again. “It’s okay.”
“No, it isn’t because what I remember is letting out some crazy power like I was on Dragonball Z or something and I can assure you I have never been a Super Saiyan.”
This made me laugh again. “Lia, it’s so good to have you back awake. You’re amazing, you know that.”
Lia curled up in the sleeping bag, yawning. She eventually went back to sleep because she said she was exhausted from what she had been through.
I know she was scared. It was something I could see flashing in her beautiful eyes.
Grumbling to myself, I ran my hand through her hair again and stayed there until she fell asleep.
The group of us would talk about this eventually. Right now we were just going to have to accept the fact that things had changed for Lia and if we didn’t work with her then all we were going to do was push her away.
