Lia
After I got off the phone, I sat with my thoughts. Then my mates joined me.
I gazed at them, wanting to ask the question that had been on my mind for a while now. “Are you guys scared of me?”
They all stared at me, shocked.
“And answer one at a time. I want you to think and answer this question, okay?” First, my eyes landed on Rain. He squirmed.
“Are you scared of me, Rain?”
He groaned. “Why do I have to be the one who answers the question first? You know I am often prone to panic.” “Just answer,” Jesse muttered, nudging him with his elbow.
I kept my gaze straight at Rain. There was no way he was going to get out of this. It didn’t matter how long he waited to answer. He was going to answer the question because I needed to know.
Out of all of my mates, Rain was one of the most honest. This was mostly because he was such shit at telling a lie. I don’t think Rain would be able to tell a lie even if he tried!
“No,” Rain admitted. “The power itself scares the fuck out of me, but I know you would never hurt us with it.” Then my gaze turned to Matt.
He was the one in the hot seat.
“Matt, are you scared of me?”
Matt shook his head. “No, I am with Rain about being scared of the power itself. This is all unprecedented but the fact of the matter is I know you would never hurt us Lia so there is no need to fear you at all.”
Then it was Jesse’s turn.
But I knew how this was going to go.
Jesse was very blunt and straight to the point. He never lied and would tell the truth no matter what. I opened my mouth to ask but Jesse shook his head, beating me to the punch.
“No I’m not and never have been scared of you. The power is rather cool if you think about it.” Then I looked at Colby. He was smirking.
“Come on, you know I’m not scared of you so don’t you dare ask something like that.” And there you have it. My mates weren’t scared of me at all.
I let out a deep breath, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders as they all spoke. But the silence that followed wasn’t quite comforting. It felt strange, as though something was missing.
I leaned back against the wall, my arms crossing over my chest. “I don’t know why, but I needed to hear that from you guys.”
Rain looked at me with soft eyes, his brow furrowing a little. “Lia, you’re not the monster you’re afraid of becoming. I think we all know that.”
Jesse leaned forward, his usual bluntness softened. “It’s natural to doubt yourself when you’re dealing with something this big. But you’ve always been yourself. The power doesn’t change that.”
Matt gave me a reassuring smile, his voice steady. “We’re in this together. No one’s going anywhere.”
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. Tt wasn’t that I didn’t trust them-I did, more than anything-it was just hard to shake the fear that I could hurt them. That somehow, I’d lose control.
“Exactly. ‘Dear mighty dragon overlords, your temple? Super unsafe. Maybe put up a ‘Beware of Instant Death’ sign next time.
Lia giggled, shaking her head. “I’m sure they’ll get right on that.”
“As they should,” I said, pretending to be deeply offended. “I mean, if we die, who’s going to keep things entertaining?” “Pretty sure none of us find you that entertaining,” Matt muttered, but the corner of his mouth twitched.
I gasped, hand over my chest. “Wow. A direct attack Someone’s still salty from losing to me in arm wrestling last week” “That wasn’t a real match.” Matt scowled. “You cheated.”
“I used strategy,” I corrected, wagging a finger at him. “Big difference.”
Colby shook his head. “I’m still confused about how distracting him with a bag of chips counts as a strategy.” “Distraction is a valid tactic,” I said, flashing a grin. “You think the ancient warriors of this temple wouldn’t use snacks against us if they had the chance?”
Lia laughed again-an actual, full laugh that made my chest warm. I glanced at her out of the corner of my eye, feeling unreasonably proud of myself.
“Okay, but real talk,” I said, sitting up straighter. “If I turn into a dragon by accident, you guys will take care of me, right?”
“You’re assuming we wouldn’t leave you as a dragon,” Jesse drawled, his face blank but his tone full of amusement.
“You wouldn’t dare,” I shot back “I’d be the coolest dragon ever. I’d swoop in and save your broody ass.” “I can take care of myself,” Jesse said smoothly.
