Lia
I sat across the fire from Xaviera, watching her sip at some blood she had put in a canteen for herself. It was a little bizarre to see someone drink blood out of a canteen, but I suppose if you were a vampire traveling, then this sort of thing tended to happen.
She was taking her time, acting very leisurely. I huffed, glancing at the rest of my mates. They were pretty annoyed, glaring at Xaveria and wanting to tell her to hurry the fuck up.
Honestly, I did too. The two of us needed to talk For one, I needed to know why this secret group of vampires wanted to kill me. Or why they were in cahoots with dragons.
“Are you done?”
Xaveria tilted her head back, chugging the rest of the blood in her canteen. A few droplets dripped down her neck, causing Rain to sigh.
“This is making me thirsty.”
She blinked. “You have several pack members and a mate. Get blood from them. This is mine.” “Hey, I wasn’t going to steal your blood!” Rain cried. “Calm down, ancient vampire lady.”
I brought my closed fist to my mouth, biting down on my knuckle to muffle a round of laughter. Please leave it to Rain to say something so ridiculous, but it was desperately needed at a time like this.
“Look, we just want some answers, and I think we have been patient enough,” I said, giving her a look “Why don’t you just tell me what is going on?”
Xaviera tilted her head to the side. “What do you want to know?”
“Why the fuck are a group of ancient vampires trying to kill her?” Matt snapped, glaring at Xaveria. I sighed. “Yes, that’s what we want to know though I would’ve asked a little nicer than Matt here.” “The vampire clan I belong to has been alive for nearly a millennium.”
Rain blinked. “I didn’t know vampires could live that long. My mom told me they could only live up to a couple of centuries.” “Most times that is true, but we have dragon blood running through our veins.”
I paled. “You do?” “Yes.”
And she didn’t even bother to elaborate.
It was pissing me off that she kept giving me these simple, one word answers. “Can you please explain? It feels like you are doing this deliberately.”
She sighed. “It means that in exchange for keeping the group that lived around here safe and keeping an eye out while they
went through their slumber, they would give us some extra power.” “And why do they want me dead?”
Xaveria rolled her eyes. “Have you not seen the evidence on the walls? Or the texts? You are part of a prophecy that is going to see you either destroy them or work alongside them to control it. They don’t want to take the chance that you could stop them
from taking over the world so hence why they want to kill you.”
It did shed some light on the situation.
“That was why those assassins tried to kill me?”
Xaveria nodded. “Yes. And before you ask, I have seen how far we have fallen, forcing ourselves to cater to these dragons who are asleep because of nothing more than power. That is why I sought you out.”
“Oh, it wasn’t because you’re my ancestor?” Rain pouted, sounding disappointed. “Here I was thinking that you decided to seek us out because of me…”
She laughed. “That is a small part of it. I did sense there was someone of my blood around.” “Wait, does that mean I am a dragon1?”
“No,” Xaveria said quickly. “Some of the clan branched away from us, not wanting to be a part of becoming slaves to the dragons. Their words and not mine, but I am starting to realize it was a good idea on their part to leave. I should’ve left a long time ago.”
Silence stretched out through our camp. I had some answers but it was leaving me with more questions. Sighing, I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Let me get this straight… I am a part of a prophecy. But why?”
Ignorance is bliss, however.
I almost wish I could go backwards.
“Can you help me harness the power of the dragonstones?”
Xaveria hummed thoughtfully. “I could, but what will you give me for it?” “Rain,” Matt said suddenly, causing Rain to balk.
“Hey, I can’t be given away!”
Xaveria laughed. “When all of this is over, I want you to kill me.”
This caused me to choke on my saliva. “What do you mean you want me to kill you?”
“I have lived far too long, and because of this dragon blood, I have no idea when my life is going to end. If anyone can kill me, it is the woman from the prophecy who is a werewolf and can practice magic and harness the power of the dragonstones.”
My lips tugged downwards into a frown. “Okay, that makes me sound like a Mary Sue.”
Xaveria shrugged again. “Like I said, take that up with the prophecy so are you going to do what I asked or not?” “I’ll do it as long as you train me.”
She smiled. “Let’s make another blood oath then.”
Imagine me doing a second blood oath. I had done two in one night!
But I had to do it. There was no choice.
