Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 145

Lia

In the morning, all of us headed back to the parking lot. Xaveria was with us, keeping to herself, her fingers twitching at her sides like she was trying to stop herself from saying something. Every step we took, she glanced over her shoulder like she expected a monster to jump out and yell, “Boo.”

I was about to ask her what was wrong when she suddenly froze in place. “It’s waking up.”

I blinked. “What?”

Xaveria’s gaze was fixed on something distant, her expression tight with unease. “It’s waking up,” she repeated, voice lower this time.

Colby groaned. “That doesn’t exactly explain what the hell you’re talking about. What is ‘it’? The last time someone said ‘it’s waking up,’ I ended up watching a horror movie and not sleeping for three days.”

Xaveria sighed. “An elder dragon.” Silence.

“Okay,” Rain said after a beat. “That sounds bad.” Colby shot him a look “No shit, Rain.”

I didn’t need to know a lot about dragons to understand that an elder dragon was something else entirely. “Js it a shifter?” I asked cautiously.

Xaveria winced, shaking her head. “No. This is an actual dragon. Shifters are descendants, while an elder is the typical dragon you see in those fantasy novels.”

“Fuck,” Rain muttered. “It’s like we just stepped into Jurassic Park” Everyone turned to stare at him.

“What?” he asked, throwing up his hands. “I can’t think of a dragon equivalent to Jurassic Park, so that’s what we’re going with right now.”

“You could’ve said Game of Thrones,” Jesse pointed out.

Rain scoffed. “Yeah, because Game of Thrones is a great reference for situations where dragons exist peacefully and everyone lives happily ever after.”

“Fair point,” Jesse conceded.

“How do you know it’s waking up?” I asked Xaveria, ignoring Rain’s nonsense.

She hesitated, then exhaled through her nose. “I can feel it. The energy-its power-it’s shifting. It’s like… like when a storm is about to break, and the air gets heavy. Only this storm is older than anything we’ve ever known.”

“Well, that’s comforting,” Colby muttered. “How close is it?” I asked, my heart pounding.

“I don’t know. But the fact that I can feel it now means it’s not as far as I’d like.”

“Great,” Colby said, clapping his hands together.” So, we have an ancient, all-powerful dragon waiting up from its nap, and we have no clue what it wants or if it’s gonna loll us on sight. Fantastic. Let’s poke it with a stick while we’re at it.”

Jesse smirked. “Do you have a stick big enough for that?” “I have Rain,” Colby shot back.

Rain gasped. “I am not a stick! I am a mighty branch at least!”

Xaveria ignored them and continued, “It’s not just waiting up for no reason. Something-or someone-is responsible.” A shiver ran down my spine. “You think someone did this on purpose?”

“Elder dragons don’t just wake up,” Xaveria said. “They sleep for centuries, even millennia. Something had to have disturbed it.”

“And that something could be us,” Rain said grimly.

“I hate feeling useless.”

“No one thinks you’re useless.” “I hate this.”

“I know you do. But you can’t ignore the fact that you are having a heat.”

She was being her usual stubborn self but this time it was a hell of a lot worse. I wish she weren1t trying to ignore her heart. Yes, Lia did have a lot on her plate. I mean, she was dealing with this whole dragon drama and the fact that she was a prophecy.

“You think it’ll be bad this time?” Lia asked nervously.

“Could be. The stress isn’t helping. But I’ll be here. You won’t go through it alone.”

All of us were going to be here just like we were last time. However, this time was different from the last. We had been together for over a year and were official mates. It was going to be a lot different.

Lia wasn1t going to have to worry about anything. She was going to be taken care of by all of us, something we were all happy to do.

“I hate needing help.”

A soft chuckle. “But you have it. Whether you want it or not.” “Yes, but it makes me feel like I am just sitting around.”

“I mean, you’ll be lying around,” I joked, earning a glare from her.
