Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 171

Matt

I had been out and about, just having a normal day. Nothing was going wrong.

There hadn’t been any threats from my pack members, so I was letting my guard down. This was my fault. It was the last thing I should’ve done, yet I didn’t realize until the last moment.

One moment I’m standing, and the next someone is coming up behind me, injecting something into my neck I slapped my hand on my neck, swearing under my breath.

This fucking sucked.

“Fuck,” I muttered, the smells of my old pack washing over me. This sucked so much.

It was all I could think K about.

Fighting wasn’t an option. My body was falling, and it hit the ground with a loud thud, making me wince.

There was laughter from whoever was around me. Was no one seriously seeing this? And if they were, why didn’t they help? Wait.

I had been on an empty street.

The people dragged me into a creepy van, which was more than stereotypical. Can you imagine them dragging me into a van, which was one of the most stereotypical things ever? Yes, let’s pull the guy into the creepy van and then take him somewhere.

When I came too, I was locked in this room. It was a small room, and I was chained to a wall.

It smelled familiar.

I think this was the place where my old pack used to meet, but for some reason, I didn’t notice this room. Never had I been in this part of the meeting house.

Groaning, I tossed my head back and then stared at the ceiling. This was not what I wanted to happen today.

Would my pack even know I was missing? Well, that would eventually, but not for some time. It was going to take hours for them to realize I was missing much to my frustration.

For what felt like hours, I heard people walking around. They would rattle the door to make me jump, but I didn’t. It was mostly just annoying the fuck out of me. All I wanted was to talk to someone so I could find out what the fuck they wanted.

Then someone came in. I recognized them as someone from my pack They smelled like a member of the old pack, but I couldn’t remember their name.

“Well, fancy seeing you here,” I said flatly.

Rain must’ve been rubbing off on me if I was making a joke at a time like this. The man stared, glaring at me. He wasn’t happy to see me, but I wasn’t happy to see here, so it was mutual.

“What do you want with me?” I asked after a while, just hoping he would get to the point. Let’s get straight to the point so I can figure out what the fuck they want with me.

I had an idea, but I wanted it confirmed.

Fuck, why did I have to be born to such shitty parents who were in such a shitty pack? It seemed like terrible luck on my part.

The air between us crackled with tension, thick with old grudges and unspoken threats. He stood there like he expected me to be afraid, like the name of my old pack still held any weight over me.

“We’re going to use you to bring Moonveil to its knees,” he said, smug. “They’ll come crawling the second they realize you’re in our hands.”

I laughed, loud and sharp. “You’re serious?”

He didn’t flinch, which was impressive. Stupid, but impressive.

“You’re going to use me as leverage?” I stepped closer, slow and deliberate. “You think they’ll just bow their heads because you say so?”

“They’ll care,” he said, though his voice wasn’t as steady now. “You’re one of theirs. That pack doesn’t abandon its own.” “Yeah?” I smirked. “Maybe that’s why I left yours.”

His face twitched, just a little. Got him.

“Don’t play dumb,” I continued. “If you think holding me hostage is going to make Moonveil surrender, then you’re not just a bastard-you’re a dumb one.”

“You’re talking real big for someone about to be chained up,” he spat.

I rolled my eyes. “Please. I’ve faced alphas more dangerous than you in my sleep. What are you going to do? Growl at me? Puff up your chest and hope I get scared?”

“You don’t know?” he asked, glaring at me.

I shrugged. “If I knew, I wouldn’t be asking. You’re not that bright, are you?”

The guy tensed, looking like he wanted to lash out at me. But instead, he turned to leave.

“You and your stupid pack prosper while we are left in the dark If you had just joined us in the first place, then this never would’ve happened.”

I huffed. “Okay, so it is jealously. You can go now.”

The guy did lash out at me this time, slashing at me. I growled, attempting to bite him but he pulled away too fast. He scrambled out of the room so fast that it was like he was going to fall right over.

I laughed, taking joy that I had rattled him enough to scare him.

But it didn’t change the fact that I was stuck in this room until they saved me.

Lia, Rain, and everyone else were well on their way out here. It was only a matter of time before they found me. I just had to be patient. To wait until they were sure they were going to find me.

Colby had to be reeling right now. He was always taking on so many responsibilities, and of course, as pack leader, it was natural he would feel this way. But it didn’t change the fact that I didn’t want him to be guilty.

None of this was his fault. He was trying-he always was-and theweight of everyone else’s pain constantly ended up on his shoulders. He never asked for that burden, but he never turned it away either. And now this?

I clenched my jaw, picturing the way his brow creased when he was stressed, the way he’d rub the back of his neck like he could scrub away the tension.

“They’ll find me soon,” I said with a shake of my head, trying to ground myself. “How the fuck am I supposed to pass the time while I’m here?”

Silence answered. Just the stillness of wherever this place was-quiet, stale, and wrong. The kind of quiet that made your thoughts too loud.

I paced. It didn’t help. My skin felt too tight, my thoughts clawing at the inside of my skull. I wasn’t used to sitting still. I wasn’t used to waiting. And waiting without answers? That was a special kind of hell.
