Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 172

Rain

Matt was still missing. It had been two days and I was a fucking nervous wreck over the fact that he was gone. Then again, all of us were nervous that he was gone.

I remembered the conversation I had with Colby the other day. He had been sitting in his bed, sulking. It was so strange to see him sulk because this wasn’t normal behavior for him.

“Hey Colby,” I said, slipping into our room.

The two of us had ended up sharing a room for a while now. It was great to have Colby as a roommate. He understood me and didn’t lose his temper like Matt tended to do.

Jesse just scared me at times. He was one my best friends but he scared the shit out of me. “I’m fine.”

“Yeah, sure. Your fine and I’m able to shut the fuck up for more than ten seconds.” Colby burst out laughing, causing me to grin.

“See, I made you laugh!”

“Rain, it’s impossible to stay serious when you are around.” “You’re welcome,” I said, plopping myself down on his bed.

He bounced slightly, giving me a look when I made myself comfortable.

“Rain, it doesn’t change the fact that Matt was kidnapped on my watch. We have to find him.” “I have a plan,” I told him, smirking.

Colby blinked. “What do you mean you have a plan? I don’t understand how you have a plan. You didn’t seem to have a plan the other day.”

“I have a vampire clan full of great trackers. They are ready and willing to do what they can to find Matt, so understand that they will do their best.”

He sighed softly. “I want to believe you, but I am struggling to accept that we’ll be able to find him anytime soon.” “Just wait.”

Both of us were doing what we could. And I had done my part, tracking down Matt with the help of my vampire contacts in the clan.

After finding out, I hurried home. I couldn’t get home fast enough. I could only think of telling them both what I had discovered.

I didn’t knock Kicking the door open felt faster. More dramatic.

It didn’t hurt to set the mood. In a matter of hours or maybe a day or so, Matt was going to be back with me. He was going to understand why I wanted to set the scene. Even if it annoyed the fuck out of him when I did this.

It got the effect I was going for-if the goal was scaring the absolute shit out of Colby and Lia. “Rain!” Colby nearly launched his tea into the air. “A That the hell, man? We live here!”

Lia jumped back, hand sparking like she was two seconds from turning me into a very attractive pile of ash. “You scared the crap out of us!”

“Yeah, sorry about that.” I held up both hands. “My bad. Next time I’ll kick the door slightly less dramatically.”

I knew they were pissed based on the looks they were giving me but they would live when they understood what I had to say to them. Let them hear what I had to say so they understood we were one step closer to finding Matt.

Colby glared. “I almost threw this mug at your face.”

“Wouldn’t be the worst thing that’s hit me this week,” I muttered. “Anyway. Not here to redecorate your walls with my body-got news.”

“Better be good,” Lia huffed, pressing a hand to her chest. “I aged five years just now.”

I held up my phone, still buzzing with adrenaline. “Got a ping. My clan tracked something near the east ridge. Old quarry. Could be the pack’s hideout.”

Both of them froze like I’d just announced I was pregnant.

The two of them looked a little shocked, but they were willing to listen to me. To hear what I had to say because it was very important. They had to know!

Everything was coming together. We finally found Matt, or so I hoped we had. Colby blinked. “Seriously?”

“No, Colby, I thought I’d kick your door in for cardio.” I rolled my eyes. “Yes. Seriously.” Lia stepped forward. “How reliable is this lead?”

“Well, considering my source is a paranoid, bloodthirsty vampire who hasn’t been wrong in a decade… I’d say about eighty seven percent. Give or take.”

Colby tilted his head. “That specific, huh?”

“And you’re welcome,” I smirked. “Besides, it’s true. Matt is soft on the inside, kind of sweet, and if you mess with him, someone’s going to bite your hand off.”

“Okay, now you’re just stretching the metaphor.”

“Am I? Because I distinctly remember Matt crying during that one dog food commercial.” Lia rolled her eyes, but the corner of her mouth twitched. “You cried too.”

“Not the point,” I said, holding up a finger. “This is about Matt the Cupcake. Precious. Fluffy. Potentially frosted.” That got a snort out of her. “If he ever hears us say this, he’s going to kill us.”

“Only after we save him,” I grinned, then let the humor fade just slightly. “Which we will.”

I was attempting to make a joke to lighten the mood. It was what I always did. Something I did the best out of everyone here. They appreciated it too. Every one of my pack members understood that this was how I was.

Was it annoying being the comic relief? Sometimes, yeah. It made people forget I felt things just as deeply, that I worried, that I broke apart, too. But I also knew-knew without a doubt-that they would listen to me when it mattered. And this?

This was one of those times.

Lia must have seen the shift in my eyes because she nodded. “Alright. Let’s go get our cupcake.” I grinned again, but this time it was sharper. Determined. “Damn right.”

Colby cleared his throat. “We need to make sure we are prepared properly, though, guys. Let’s not rush in there and then put ourselves at risk Putting ourselves at risk puts Matt at risk, which is exactly the thing not to do.”

“When Colby is right, he is right.”

He smirked at me. “I’m always right, Rain.” “Are you?” I teased.

Lia laughed. “Okay, as much as I would love to continue to have this conversation, we do need to hurry up and rescue Matt. Let us hope we find him in time.”

My stomach clenched. There was Lia making everything feel real again.

I knew we would get there in time because there was never any doubt we would protect him. “Let’s get our Matt back!” I shouted, pumping my fist in the air.

The two of them winced. I grinned sheepishly, not meaning to be so loud, but it was too late for that now.
