Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 102

Ruby could feel the heat shoot up her arm from her fingertips, but Mira's situation was too urgent for her to shake Cassian's hand away immediately. Instead, as soon as they both opened their car doors, she flung his hand off and climbed straight into the passenger seat.

Cassian felt the empty space where her hand had been, his eyes flickering for a moment, but he said nothing and slid behind the wheel.

"Ruby, you're asking me for help," he said as he started the car, his tone weary, laced with a hint of accusation he couldn't quite suppress.

Ruby stiffened, belatedly realizing what she'd just done. Color bloomed across her face, but she quickly masked it with her usual cold defiance. "Are you planning to go back on your word, Mr. Veyne?"

"As you just reminded me, we're still legally married," Cassian replied, his voice dry. "Compared to everything else, this little favor is hardly worth refusing."

She pressed her lips together, forcing herself to sound as calm as possible even as her voice trembled. "I just want to make sure you're not contradicting yourself."

Cassian fell silent, glancing at her tense profile. The anxiety in her eyes did nothing to ease the tightness in his chest.

Bennett's call came through almost immediately. "Mr. Veyne, we pulled the security footage from Frostbourne Lodge, but it's too dark to make anything out. We also checked the front desk records—it just says the regular staff are on leave and they've hired a few temps. There's nothing else."

Cassian put the call on speaker, so Ruby heard everything. Her heart sank.

If Cassian's people couldn't find anything… then what about Mira?

The thought sent a sharp pain through her chest, so intense she could barely breathe.

Seeing the light drain from her eyes, Cassian felt a pang of guilt he couldn't explain.

"Keep going," he ordered, his voice low and commanding. "Check every camera in the area. I want her found, and I want her safe."

There was a pause on the other end before Bennett answered with crisp determination, "Yes, Mr. Veyne!"

Ruby's lashes trembled.

Why?

She glanced at Cassian, confusion tightening her features. She'd told him Mira wasn't his child—so why was he still helping her?
