Kemp trotted behind them, helping to cover their tracks.
"Who's there? Who's skulking around?!"
A sudden shout erupted from behind them.
The group froze, not daring to make a sound.
"It's the middle of the night! What are you yelling about?!"
A voice, even more arrogant and aggressive than the first, cut through the air.
Kemp stepped forward, glaring at the man.
Upon seeing Kemp's familiar, roguish face, the security guard with the flashlight shrank back, cursing his bad luck. "Oh, it's you, Kemp. Haha, I was wondering who was out here so late."
"I just ate. Can't I take a walk?"
Kemp put his hands on his hips with a swagger and rolled his eyes. "You're a security guard, so act like one. With that attitude, why don't you go search my uncle's office?"
The guard immediately bowed obsequiously. "Of course, of course. You go on and digest your meal. I'll go patrol somewhere else."
With that, he scurried away.
As soon as he was out of sight, he grumbled under his breath, "Uncle, uncle, uncle. You'd be nothing without your uncle, always throwing his weight around. We'll see how long you can act so high and mighty..."
Victor glanced back, a little surprised that Kemp had stepped in to help them.
Kemp casually tossed the toothpick he'd been chewing to the ground and shot him a dramatic eye-roll.
"If someone else comes, I'm not helping you again."
He snorted.
But the next moment, he felt a kick to his rear.
"You brat, is that any way to speak to Mr. Hargrove?"
A voice boomed like thunder in his ear.
Kemp's uncle appeared, huffing and puffing with his large belly.
Kemp yelped, clutching his backside.
Was this really his uncle?
"Mr. Hargrove?"
Suddenly, Kemp, who had been focused on his bruised ego, snapped back to reality, realizing he'd caught something important.
