Maybe not every moment.
Ruby shot a quick glance at Cassian, only to find his eyes fixed unwaveringly on her. Her heart skipped, and she quickly looked away.
But Cassian made no attempt to hide it, continuing to study her face openly.
"This is the second time, Ruby."
His words caught her off guard, and she froze, hands mid-motion.
Second time? What did he mean?
Puzzled, she looked up and met his steady, intense gaze. In an instant, the meaning clicked.
The first time was when Mira had that stomach bug and he'd helped out at the hotel.
The second was now—Mira kidnapped, and once again, she'd come to him for help in the dead of night.
Ruby pressed her lips together. "I'll take Mira and leave tomorrow."
"You misunderstood me."
Cassian pulled out a chair and sat down with a casual authority, as if he owned the place.
Mira, now fed and full of energy, squirmed in his arms, babbling and waving her tiny fists. Yet Cassian held her securely, unbothered by the wriggling child.
It was oddly harmonious—the sharply dressed man with a baby in his lap, pacifier and all.
Ruby blinked, her tone softening. "Then what do you mean?"
"Morgan wasn't wrong about one thing. A single mother and her child… it's not safe for you out there. Quinborough is the Veyne family's domain."
His words were tinged with pride, but Ruby fell silent.
He wasn't exaggerating.
The Veyne family was the wealthiest in Quinborough, controlling the city's economy with an unshakable grip.
Under his protection, she wouldn't have to keep dragging Mira from place to place, always looking over her shoulder.
Ruby's eyes dimmed.
She'd always believed she could take care of Mira on her own, protect her until she grew up safe and sound.
But this time, the kidnapping had forced her to face the truth—her own limitations.
Could she really keep Mira safe?
Morgan's people had brazenly snatched Mira from her arms, and she'd been powerless to stop them.
The stubborn strength in Ruby's spine wilted, as if a heavy stone had settled on her shoulders, making it hard even to breathe.
Cassian noticed the shift in her mood. His voice softened, almost gentle. "You're my wife, Ruby. Northridge Manor is your home. Always has been."
His tone was persuasive, almost hypnotic.
"No."
Ruby shook her head.
Cassian was caught off guard.
She bit her lip and took Mira from his arms.
He stared straight at her. "Why?"
Ruby stepped back, putting space between them.
