Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 109

Ruby peeked inside, surprise flickering across her eyes.

She'd rented this apartment for a full month, drawn in by the prime location—a quiet, safe neighborhood with a 24-hour convenience store and pharmacy just down the street, plus easy access to public transit.

But what truly mattered was the sense of security. The building had round-the-clock security and nightly patrols. She'd felt certain she'd found a safe haven.

Yet now, standing in the entry, she was almost dizzy with the feeling of stumbling into a delightful surprise.

The place was so much warmer than she'd expected. Childlike collages adorned the walls, and a thick, expensive-looking carpet covered the floor.

But the most astonishing part was the price—far lower than she'd expect for a place this size. There were two cozy bedrooms draped in soft curtains, a tidy study, and a playroom already set up for a child.

Even a crib stood beside the master bed, looking every bit as comfortable as the queen-sized mattress.

Ruby halted, barely hiding her amazement as she turned to the elderly landlady. "Mrs. Foster, are you sure there's no mistake?"

She recited her own details and the apartment she'd originally booked, just to be certain.

Mrs. Foster hurried to wheel Ruby's suitcase inside. "Oh, there are so many empty apartments here, dear. The moment I saw you, I just felt this… connection."

She paused, her voice growing soft and nostalgic. "You remind me so much of my daughter."

Ruby blinked, caught in the warmth of Mrs. Foster's gentle gaze.

In that instant, all the wariness she'd carried melted away.

"Big eyes, so polite and sweet," Mrs. Foster said, her smile deepening with affection.

Ruby couldn't help but be swept up in her kindness, her thoughts drifting to her own grandmother—strict, but always smiling just for her, just like Mrs. Foster now.

"Don't worry about a thing. There are plenty of open apartments here. I know how tough it is, taking care of a little one. Picking a good spot for you was no trouble at all."

"This place? My daughter and granddaughter used to live here, so all the children's furniture is already set up."

Mrs. Foster rested a gentle hand on Ruby's shoulder, warmth seeping through her touch, thawing the last traces of anxiety in Ruby's heart.
