No one expected the golden retriever to snap like that. Its eyes were bloodshot, even more frenzied than before.

For a split second, everyone just froze, unable to process what was happening.

The golden blur lunged forward. By the time Sylas realized what was happening and tried to intervene, it was already too late.

The dog barreled straight into Ruby's legs, knocking her to the ground.

Instinctively, Ruby wrapped her arms around Mira, shielding the little girl as they tumbled onto the rough gravel. Sharp stones scraped Ruby's arm, drawing blood.

Sylas's expression darkened. Without hesitation, he thrust his arm between the dog's jaws and the two, barely keeping Ruby and Mira from being bitten.

In one swift motion, Sylas kicked the dog away, pinning it firmly under his boot.

He immediately pulled Ruby and Mira into his arms, his voice trembling as he looked down at them. "Are you alright?"

Ruby's first instinct was to check on Mira. Thankfully, the little girl was just frightened—too young to understand how close they'd come to real danger. As Ruby cradled and soothed her, Mira's whimpers quickly faded.

Seeing that Mira's smooth arms were untouched, Ruby finally let out a shaky breath—only then did she feel the sharp sting up and down her own arm.

She glanced down. Her skin was scraped raw, and there were tiny spots of blood smeared across the concrete.

All traces of Sylas's earlier calm vanished. His handsome features hardened, stormy and dangerous.

But when Ruby looked up and met his gaze, he forced himself to soften.

"Don't be scared. I'll take you to the hospital."

Just seeing the fresh scrapes on her pale skin made his brow furrow with concern.

The dog's owner, sensing trouble, didn't even bother to check on the animal—he just bolted, disappearing down the street.

Sylas ignored everyone else entirely; his attention was fixed on Ruby.

He dialed emergency services with shaking hands. Minutes later, an ambulance arrived in a rush.

Despite the pain wrinkling her brow, Ruby couldn't help but laugh at how over-the-top Sylas was being.

"Let's get you checked out," he said, undeterred.
