Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 144

"You—"

She started, confused, but Bennett glanced at Cassian instead.

In that instant, Gennifer understood whose idea this really was. She turned, searching Cassian's expression.

His sharply sculpted profile was half swallowed by shadow, making it impossible to read his mood, though the chill radiating from him was unmistakable.

Gennifer's chest tightened, but she gathered her courage. "Cassian, what does Bennett mean by this?"

As her words faded, Cassian's lashes flickered. His gaze shifted—slow and deliberate—to the gift box in Bennett's hand.

His voice was cool and measured. "It's not for you."

"What?"

Gennifer's voice shot up, but she caught herself, softening her tone quickly. "Cassian, I only bid for it because I care about you. That was my grandmother's keepsake. If you won't give it to me, who else could it possibly be for?"

She tried to sound gentle, almost playful, her words sweet as honey.

But Cassian acted as if he hadn't even heard her. Instead, he gestured to Bennett, his voice icy: "Take Miss Grayson home."

His long, graceful fingers motioned in the air. On his middle finger, a black-and-silver ring glinted coldly.

The sight of that ring made Gennifer's whole body go rigid. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, drifted to Cassian's face.

She remembered that ring perfectly—it was the engagement ring he'd exchanged with Ruby at the very beginning.

Back then, Cassian had shown little interest in the engagement itself, and the ring had been a last-minute afterthought, hardly what you'd expect from the wealthiest man in the city.

Gennifer's lips parted in shock, a shiver of dread running through her.

She'd never seen Cassian wear that ring before. The only time she'd come across it was when she'd once helped him look for some files, stumbling on it in a forgotten corner beneath the desk in his office.

Why was it on his hand now?

Gennifer's mind reeled. She couldn't even recall how Bennett had managed to get her into the car.

Only when a rush of cold air slipped through the barely closed window, stinging her cheeks like a slap, did she snap back to herself.

A terrifying thought struck her.

Cassian and Ruby… what exactly—

"Miss Grayson, your apartment is just ahead. I'll let you off here."
