Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 150

Ever since Gennifer showed up, she was barely tolerated in the house.

But Ruby's grandmother was the exception—her affection never wavered. If anything, she became even more protective and indulgent toward Ruby.

When Ruby was arrested, everything happened so fast she didn't even get a chance to defend herself. She spent a year in prison, and she wasn't entirely alone during that time.

Gennifer would drop by every so often, just to mock her, sometimes making pointed remarks about how close she and Cassian had become.

From the day she ended up behind bars, Ruby's hope for Cassian had died for good.

But her indifference only seemed to frustrate Gennifer more.

That's when Gennifer would use her grandmother against her.

Only when Ruby heard rumors—whispered tales that her grandmother was so furious about her "crimes" that she'd threatened to disown her—would Ruby finally react.

Whenever that happened, she'd turn her back to Gennifer, biting her lip until she could barely hold back her sobs, tears streaming down her cheeks no matter how many times she tried to wipe them away.

In those days, all she wished for was to be released, to kneel at her grandmother's side and explain herself in person.

She had never done the things they accused her of. It was all lies and slander.

She had always been a good child, always worthy of her grandmother's trust.

But life rarely cares for our wishes.

When she was finally set free, her grandmother was already gone.

Now, Ruby's eyes brimmed with tears, her lashes wet and shimmering.

But this moment was different…

Her hands trembled as she held the envelope.

Her grandmother's letter said she had never believed a single word of those rumors. She had always stubbornly, fiercely believed in the child she raised as her own.

Ruby bit down on her lip so hard she drew blood, refusing to let go.

Mira, sensing her mother's grief, reached up with her tiny hand, gently patting Ruby's chest with an uncanny sensitivity for someone so small.

Her daughter's hand was soft as clouds, feather-light, barely more than a whisper on her skin, yet somehow it soothed her aching heart.

Ruby took Mira's hand and pressed it softly to her lips.

Her breath warmed Mira's palm, but the little girl made no fuss, babbling softly as she wiped tears from Ruby's cheeks.

Noticing that Ruby was finally calming down, the staff member leading the process spoke gently: "We completely understand how you're feeling. Would you like a moment? We can wait before continuing."

"No, let's go ahead."

Ruby wiped her face and stood.

The dead are gone.

Life moves forward.

Especially now, with Mira beside her, she had to be strong. She couldn't let herself drown in grief any longer.

The staff nodded respectfully. "Very well. Since the estate is quite extensive, would you please follow me to our vault?"

Ruby nodded and followed.
