Sylas spoke slowly, his eyes fixed unblinking on Gennifer.
Those narrow, hawk-like eyes sharpened beneath slightly furrowed brows, flecks of cold light flickering in their depths—a gaze that sent a shiver down the spine.
Gennifer froze, her mouth opening and closing in confusion, but no words came. Her complexion paled.
She wasn't stupid.
She understood Sylas's accusation was aimed squarely at what she'd just done to Ruby.
The silence stretched until the air itself seemed to grow heavy.
At last, Sylas let out a soft, mocking laugh, breaking the tension. "The lead counsel of Veyne & Co.? Can't even answer a simple question…"
He folded his arms and shot Cassian a sidelong glance, his voice dripping with contempt. "Uncle, does your firm even have standards? Or can just anyone walk in off the street?"
A ripple of shock passed through the bystanders.
After all, several people had already realized the identities of three out of the four present—and as for the so-called Mr. Veyne's nephew, everything about him screamed old money.
But Quinborough was Cassian's city. Even if they were family, publicly humiliating Gennifer like this was as good as slapping Cassian across the face.
Realizing this, the crowd's gazes flitted between Cassian and Gennifer, anxious and wary, waiting to see his reaction.
Cassian, however, remained impassive. His lips pressed into a thin line, he said nothing at all.
Gennifer was left standing alone, exposed and humiliated.
She shot Cassian several pleading looks, desperate for help, but he didn't even acknowledge her. By the end, something inside her broke.
She remembered this man—he was the one who'd invited Ruby as his date to the auction last time.
Gennifer's hands curled into fists beneath her sleeves, jealousy and bitterness threatening to spill over.
Why?
Ruby had already severed ties with the Grayson family—she didn't even count as a socialite anymore. So why did men like these still leap to her defense?
She herself was publicly insulted by Ruby's admirers and could only endure the contempt in silence.
It was obvious—this man was standing up for Ruby.
