Sylas's eyes were unusually bright, brimming with hope as he watched Ruby, as if searching her gaze for some hidden answer.
But Ruby startled at his sudden intensity, her whole body instinctively pulling back.
The faint scent that had lingered between them vanished, and Sylas's outstretched hand froze awkwardly in midair.
"What do you mean?"
Ruby's brows drew together, suspicion flickering in her eyes as she put herself on guard.
What was she supposed to remember? Or—was he confusing her for someone else?
For a fleeting moment, Ruby recalled the melodramatic twists of some dime-store romance she'd read. The thought made her glance at Sylas with a peculiar expression, and whatever strange emotion had seized her melted away in an instant.
Sylas met Ruby's wary gaze. It felt as though a cold, sharp claw squeezed his heart—the way she looked at him, so cautious and unfamiliar, sent a chill through him.
"It's nothing."
He forced a small, strained smile, swallowing whatever he'd meant to say.
The atmosphere inside the car shifted, growing tense and stagnant.
Ruby looked at Sylas's profile—he seemed so lost and disappointed. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, the words never came.
Awkward silence filled the space between them, and the car rolled to a stop in the quiet.
It dawned on Ruby, belatedly, that she'd gotten into Sylas's car to avoid Cassian, but had never asked where they were headed.
She only snapped out of her thoughts when Sylas opened the door and reached his hand toward her. "Come see something," he said.
Ruby frowned, glancing down at her arms.
Mira, cradled in her embrace, gazed out the window with eyes wide as galaxies, craning her neck in curiosity.
Ruby hesitated, then decided to get out. Peering out her window, she saw nothing but a long, empty road, dense woods, and tangled thickets—this place was utterly remote.
Yet strangely, she felt no fear. Even though she barely knew Sylas, anxiety didn't rise within her. If anything, there was a quiet trust, or perhaps an inexplicable pull toward him.
Had she really forgotten something? Was it possible that she and Sylas had known each other all along?
Ruby kept her face blank, hiding her confusion.
She sidestepped his offered hand, clutching Mira close as she bent to exit the car.
The view opened up immediately. She realized the car had stopped in front of a secluded manor, utterly deserted.
The silence was profound—so complete that even the wind seemed to hold its breath, making the place feel all the more desolate.
Following Sylas's lead, she stepped inside. The hallway lights flickered on, revealing rows upon rows of striking paintings along the corridor.
