Cassian's head throbbed as the heavy scent of perfume hit his nose.
Across the room, Ruby stood rigid and silent, her gaze cold as steel, fixed on the couple's intimate display.
A year in prison had forced her into grueling manual labor and built her strength, but throwing a grown woman several feet? That was beyond her. She could spot Gennifer's little act a mile away.
Ruby arched an eyebrow, lips curving in a silent, mocking smile.
It was only then Cassian snapped out of his stupor and, realizing what he'd done, hastily pushed away the now-steady Gennifer.
The lingering warmth of his presence abruptly vanished. Gennifer froze for a heartbeat, then looked up and met Ruby's clear, penetrating eyes.
Understanding dawned instantly. Bitterness twisted her features as she clenched her fists.
Cassian cleared his throat, brow furrowed. "Ruby, Gennifer is your sister."
Ruby's gaze slid from Gennifer to Cassian, his upright, self-righteous posture almost laughable.
"Sisters sharing a husband, is that it?"
Her words dripped with icy sarcasm.
If she'd wanted to be any clearer, she'd have drawn a map. Cassian's face darkened instantly.
Gennifer shot Ruby a triumphant glance.
So, she knows.
But even so…
Cassian was hers. She would never share him with Ruby.
Gennifer played the innocent, eyes wide with feigned hurt. "Ruby, how could you say that? Blame me all you want, but Cassian is your husband. Don't you even trust him?"
"Cassian… ha."
Ruby's only reply was to slam the door, the sound echoing through the hall.
Cassian's expression turned stony.
Gennifer, watching him out of the corner of her eye, barely hid her satisfaction. This was how it should be. If Ruby kept pushing Cassian away, sooner or later the brilliant, handsome man would be hers alone.
"Cassian… about Ruby—"
She lowered her head, her voice growing small and pitiful. "Maybe I shouldn't have come to you… It's just that Legal's made this a top priority, they insisted I report to you as soon as possible…"
Her words trailed off into a whisper, as though weighed down by the world itself.
Cassian felt as if his mind was drowning in fog, every thought sluggish and heavy.
