Ruby pressed her lips together, forcing herself to look calm, though her eyes drifted aimlessly over the shifting scenery outside the car window.
Victor kept glancing at her in the rearview mirror, searching her face for any sign of emotion.
If you watched closely, you could tell from the tension in her shoulders that something was off.
Victor finally tore his gaze away and focused on the road, driving Ruby toward the restaurant.
But when they arrived, he realized the place had already changed hands.
"How about we just grab something simple nearby?" he suggested.
Ruby had already noticed that the once-familiar bistro had been replaced by an unfamiliar grillhouse.
"No," she said, her voice quiet but firm. "After being abroad for so long, I was really looking forward to this place."
Victor shook his head, undeterred, and began searching for the old restaurant's new address on his phone.
When the new location—"Veyne & Co."—popped up on the screen, his lashes fluttered, but he didn't hesitate. He spun the wheel and headed off in the new direction.
Meanwhile, Cassian, who had just received a document, didn't linger. He told Bennett to head back to the office first.
Inside the car, Cassian tried to relax his expression, but the tightness in his jaw made everyone else uneasy.
"Veyne & Co.'s recent issues have been a real headache. I'll have to trouble you, Professor, to step in," Cassian finally broke the silence. His tone was polite and measured, but the straight set of his back and the air of cold authority he carried made it clear he was used to being in charge.
"My student was never the most diligent—of course, I'm happy to help however I can," the elderly man replied, forcing a genial smile as he shot Gennifer a subtle look.
With the pleasantries exchanged, Cassian pressed his lips together and turned to gaze out the window, watching the lines of trees slip past in a blur.
The car lapsed into silence again.
Gennifer's expression was tight with frustration.
The only reason Veyne & Co. had managed to navigate this crisis was because Ruby had agreed to meet Victor and provide her initial design sketches. But Gennifer couldn't stand being outdone. That's why she'd invited her university mentor—now a well-known legal expert—to help devise a strategy to fight the copycat company.
