"Ma'am, even though I've double-checked their equipment, there's always a chance something slipped through. I think you and Mr. Veyne should head back to the office for now."

Bennett braced himself and stepped forward, trying to calm Ruby as she bristled with irritation.

Hearing this, Ruby's mind immediately shifted into high gear. She quickly pieced together what might happen next and shot Cassian a cold glare. Twisting her wrist free from his grasp, she said, "I can walk on my own."

With that, she strode ahead, her heels echoing in the corridor.

Sylas, who had been lounging against the wall without a care, instantly fell into step behind her.

Cassian's hand dropped to his side, fingers curling into a tight fist before he forced himself to relax and let go, feigning nonchalance. He narrowed his eyes, a shadow flickering in their depths.

Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Victor was about to follow as well. Cassian blocked his path with a raised hand. "Thanks for helping with the files, but this is a family matter. I'm going to have to ask you to give us some privacy."

Victor stopped in his tracks, and Cassian turned his attention away, striding purposefully inside.

With things spelled out so clearly, Victor had no choice but to stay behind. He quickly sent Ruby a text: *Call me if you need anything. I can come pick you up.*

After that, he made his way toward the underground parking lot. Before leaving, he cast a long look at the old restaurant across the street—a place he hadn't visited in ages—then turned away, his expression cool and detached. Gone was the warmth from just moments ago when he'd been talking with Ruby.

Without company, a meal was just a meal.

Ruby and Sylas sat side by side, facing Cassian across the desk. Cassian's expression was unreadable, his gaze fixed on the small gap between the two of them. The longer he stared, the more that distance seemed to needle him.

"So, what brings you to Veyne & Co.?" Cassian asked, brows furrowing as he aimed the question squarely at Sylas.

Sylas only toyed lazily with his loosened tie. "Just passing through."
