Sylas clenched his jaw, managing a smile, but every so often his sharp canine teeth flashed—like a glint of steel ready to be unsheathed.
Tension crackled in the air between them, and Bennett, standing off to the side, was practically drenched in sweat.
He glanced blearily at the blinding sunlight outside, then rubbed the goosebumps on his arms, caught between burning nerves and a chill that raced up his spine.
A couple of brisk knocks sounded at the door.
Bennett, as if granted a last-minute reprieve, scampered over to open it.
Ruby shifted, uneasy, trying to put some space between herself and Cassian, but his grip was unyielding—she couldn't budge.
Gennifer appeared in the doorway, heels clicking against the floor, and the scene before her made her eyes flare with jealousy.
"You…"
She opened her mouth, no sound coming out, frozen where she stood.
Cassian barely reacted, only glancing over with mild confusion. "Did you need something?"
The moment Ruby met Gennifer's betrayed gaze, she shot to her feet, her ears burning red all the way down her neck, flooded with regret.
How could she have let herself play along with Cassian's little charade, just to appease him? Especially after all the grief he'd put her through—why would she feel sorry for the Veynes?
The realization jolted her awake. What was she thinking? This was beyond foolish.
Summoning strength from somewhere deep inside, she managed to break free from Cassian's hold, stumbling back several steps to put distance between them.
Cassian's arms dropped to his sides, his face darkening at once. But with Gennifer present, he couldn't just repeat his performance. He pinched the bridge of his nose, shooting Gennifer an irritated look.
