Gennifer couldn't help but frown, a shiver running down her spine.

Cassian had always called her his wife—formal, distant, a perfect reflection of their marriage in name only. But now, hearing him use a term as intimate as "darling," she felt her brow twitch in surprise.

Her jaw tightened. "Mr. Veyne, this is a marriage of convenience, nothing more. I don't care if you bring other women back to Northridge Manor, and you have no right to question where I go."

Her words were cold, leaving no room for discussion.

Cassian's eyes flickered, but instead of letting go, his grip on her wrist tightened.

Those eyes, usually icy and detached, now burned with an unfamiliar heat, like a flame flickering behind them.

He ground his teeth. "You think I don't care?"

She laughed bitterly. "Of course, you never miss a chance to flirt with every woman who crosses your path."

Ruby glanced at the finger near her nose, her irritation mounting. She slapped Gennifer's hand away and stepped forward, clutching Mira closely. Her eyes were cold and menacing. "Gennifer, don't think just because Cassian's backing you up, I won't put you in your place."

Her voice was icy, the threat unmistakable.

Gennifer shrank back a step, her eyes darting nervously. "What… what are you planning to do?"

Ruby looked at the two of them, suddenly losing all interest in the fight. She gathered a squirming Mira in her arms and turned sharply, stalking toward her room.

"Ruby!" Cassian's furious shout echoed down the hallway, but Ruby didn't break stride.

Gennifer seethed. "Cassian, she's unbelievable! She actually hit you! Who does she think she is?"
