Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 206

Ruby’s mind was a tangled mess.

Yes, she’d intended to use Cassian to finally make Sylas give up on her, but now that things had gone too far, she was more troubled than ever.

She shook her head, trying to scatter the jumbled thoughts, desperate to get back to Mira—her sweet little angel, the only one who could calm her heart.

But as she reached the bottom of the stairs, before she could even look up, a shadow fell across her path.

She stopped dead.

“Do you still love him?”

The question was barely more than a whisper.

It seemed to ask, didn’t you say he betrayed you? Didn’t you insist you’d never go back? Hadn’t you…?

A thousand accusations hovered on Sylas’s lips, but in the end, he just swallowed them with a shaky breath, staring at her with those pleading, heartbreakingly confused eyes. The lump in Ruby’s throat made it hard to breathe.

“Sylas, there’s no future for us.”

She didn’t bother dodging the question, just laid it out, plain and cold.

Her eyes, usually so gentle, were icy and proud.

Sylas blinked, stunned—he could hardly connect the woman standing in front of him to the one he’d seen moments ago by the picture window.

“…Fine.”

He forced a laugh, but the attempt at a smile was more painful than tears.

Ruby was still caught off guard by how quickly he agreed, but he didn’t give her a chance to respond—he just turned and strode away.

Only when his crisp, fresh scent had faded, leaving nothing but emptiness, did Ruby finally snap out of her daze.

She pressed her lips together, steeling herself, and slipped away from the crowd, heading for the main house.

She didn’t stop until she pushed open her bedroom door. Inside, the housekeeper was shaking a rattle at Mira, making her giggle.

The door startled the housekeeper, who turned to see Ruby standing there, pale as a ghost.

She hurried over, wanting to help, but Ruby held up a hand, shaking her head. “I’ll take care of her.”

Those four words seemed to cost her every ounce of strength.

Though the housekeeper’s worry was obvious, she hesitated only a moment before quietly leaving.

The soft click of the door closing echoed in the silent room. Ruby, barely holding herself together, staggered to the bed and collapsed at Mira’s side, burying her face in her daughter’s tiny chest. Only then did her tense body finally relax.

Mira’s round eyes blinked up at her, all innocence and curiosity.

“Mommy, mommy,” she mumbled, clapping her hands, trying out the word.

Ruby’s heart melted into a puddle.

“Mommy’s here.”

She leaned down to kiss Mira’s cheek, but suddenly, the vivid memory of being in Cassian’s arms just half an hour earlier flashed before her eyes.

Her lips froze, stopping just short of Mira’s skin.

Knock, knock.
